The Holy Grail, a Ford Sierra RS500 Cosworth with only 40,057 miles

MODEL HISTORY
The Sierra RS Cosworth project was defined in the spring of 1983 by the then recently appointed head of Ford Motorsport in Europe. It was established that at the time, Ford was no longer competitive in this area. After receiving full support from Ford Public Relations, the project was underway with the Sierra chosen as the basis for the project. Ford Motorsport in Europe approached the automotive company Cosworth who answered positively, but put up two conditions: The street version of the car had to produce no less than 204 HP, and Ford had to accept no less than 15,000 engines. Few cars have ever been greeted with such enthusiasm as the original Sierra RS Cosworth, perhaps only the exclusive 500 cars that were developed to become an evolution edition, unbeatable on the track. Aston Martin at Tickford were assigned with converting the 500 cars, which in 1987 were to be announced as the RS500. Engineering differences aside, largely the cars were aesthetically similar to the standard Cosworth. The main differences being the additional boot mounted spoiler, discrete badges and the revised front bumper to aid improved cooling. This included the removal of the front fog lamps as standard, but with the dealerships offering reinstatement as an optional extra.

HISTORY FILE
This vehicle has come from a stable once housing some of the most desirable Mk2 Escorts including one of only two known surviving Ex-Ford Motor Company Series X Sport Saloons, KHJ184.  Work commenced in 2011 by Martin Gray, owner of Gray & Adams in Fraserburgh, and was built over 18 months to create his perfect Ford rally car.  A catalogue of 100 plus photos reveals every detail of the build process and once complete it was used for shows and weekend fun.  Then sold to Alex Wallace in 2012, a connoisseur of the RS marque and long-term member of the RS Owners Club, he embarked on taking this RS1800 Motorsport Escort to a competition level with an open cheque book to achieve a formidable MSA Approved machine.  Correspondence from the likes of Millington Race Engines, C Bradley Motor Engineers and Wayne Mitchel Ltd will inform the knowledgeable that this car has been worked on by respected industry leaders and the invoices from them will open the eyes to the less informed!  Once complete recent outings to the Lakes Tour and Silverstone Ford Fair have resulted in awards and trophies again helping to reveal the standard of work being offered here to a discerning individual.  A works Escort type registration number STW4R is included.

INTERIOR
This Escort RS Turbo has an outstanding interior remaining exactly as Ford intended.  The fully adjustable supportive Recaro seats show no wear to the spotless Daytona Raven fabric (Code SW).  Matching door cards are pristine with only slight markings to the driver’s pull handle.  The pristine carpets have retained complete fullness to the pile and remain beautifully preserved having been protected from new by Ford rubber mats.  All switches, knobs and dials function correctly and the fully operational Ford Self-Seek stereo radio/cassette with amplifier remains fitted.  The Ford badge on the steering wheel is marked.  The boot area is spotless with original build stickers intact and a straight uncut parcel shelf.  Even the Ford labels to the seatbelts remains fitted!  A truly magnificent example of this legendary RS Ford.

ENGINE & TRANSMISSION
The 1.6 OHC (CVH) fuel injected engine with a Garrett AiResearch T3 turbo charger and intercooler is completely factory standard making this vehicle a rare example that is now the exception.  Producing 132bhp in such a lightweight car, the 0-60 dash is dealt with in 8.2 seconds and a top speed of 128mph is achieved.  A completely standard engine compartment displays all the factory stickers and stampings and the two correct ID plates have never been painted over.  Accuracy seekers will be pleased to see red Motorcraft leads and a Motorcraft battery with the Ford plastic battery cover.  A factory exhaust system remains fitted.  The 5-speed manual Ford BC box is light and precise with crisp clutch action.

WHEELS, TYRES & BRAKES
The original unrestored light alloy 6X15 RS wheels remain undamaged and pristine.  Five matching quality Avon 195/50 R15 tyres have masses of tread remaining.  This fast Ford icon stops as well as it goes with the ABS braking system designed in conjunction with Lucus Girling working perfectly.

HISTORY FILE
Registered new on 22nd January 1988, this incredible example has had just four keepers from new, (three of which are known to each other), and having covered a mere 39,022 miles, represents a truly rare survivor.  The supplying Ford Main Dealer was Passey & Porter Ltd and the original Ford plastic wallet still houses the Sales Executive and Service Manager cards.  First owner of 30 months was a retired Mr Robert Ferris who sold the car in June 1990 to also retired neighbour, Bernard Harding.  A copy V5 reveals the same postcode of the first two owners.  During this time the car was known by Julian Shattlock whose parents lived on the same street and due to regular probing bought the car in August 2012.  Recommissioned by him due to infrequent use the car was then sold to the current blue oval fan.  The original service book is fully stamped up to 37,455 miles and all handbooks, radio guide and dealership literature from point of sale are in the wallet.  Furthermore, the history file contains MOT certificates and invoices to further support the incredible low mileage.  This vehicle is certain to appeal to a collector of modern classics wanting one of the best, most original lowest mileage examples in existence.  The ultimate Ford fans desire.
