Halogen headlamps, auxiliary driving lamps, safety glass all round, anti-burst locks, front air dam, unique bodyside and bonnet coachline treatment, ‘1600 Sport’ script, black finish window surrounds, black drip rail, black door mirrors, laminated windscreen, simulated leather covered sports steering wheel, reclining front seats, front head restraints, centre console incorporating quartz clock, hazard warning flashers, heated rear window, tachometer, padded sun visors, two-speed heater, aeroflow ventilation with eye ball vents. Optional extras; rubberised tail spoiler.

Using English shells from the Halewood Plant in Merseyside, this Mk2 Escort 1600 Sport was assembled by The Ford Motor Company of South Africa (Pty) Ltd in Silverton, SA. This superb example is simply incredible finished in the original colour of Cologne Blue (code OP). The paintwork displays a beautiful polished shine and bright uniform finish. Structurally superb owing to a lifetime in warmer climes and all fit and shuts lines are linear. A small ding to the lower edge of the bonnet can be seen. All trims sections are intact as are the original 1600 Sport badges and decals, along with the correct twin coachline on the bonnet and at high and low level to the sides. Once in the shadow of its RS counterparts, this mid-range performance Escort can now hold its own within the classic Ford community as a very rare and desirable model.

The wonderfully preserved interior of this example clearly displays the hallmarks of cherished ownership. The Cadiz Striped Fabric seats in Brown with blue trim (code OE) are spotlessly clean with no sagging, splits or tears and only very faint wear to some facings visible upon close scrutiny. The original brown loop pile carpeting, headlining and matching door cards are beautifully preserved. The vinyl dash top and the fascia with ‘Sport’ embossed to the nearside remain just as Ford intended. The rear parcel shelf has a small crack. All functions controls and gauges operate seamlessly and the factory fitted Ford push button radio remains in place but not connected. The original faux leather trimmed steering wheel is intact with the correct boss and Ford centre badge displaying natural signs of aging. A classic Ford interior to delight the avid blue oval fan.

The 1600GT OHV engine with twin venturi carburettor and automatic choke produces 84bhp at 5500rpm and torque figures of 124Nm. A top speed of 101mph and 0-60 in 11 seconds are delivered by this mid-level sporting Escort. A spotlessly clean and unspoilt engine bay displaying factory plates and stickers is ready for bonnet up exhibiting. Perfectly matched to the engine characteristics, the four speed close ratio gearbox offers precise short shift changes. A hugely nostalgic driving experience.

The factory 13in sports road wheels remain true to the Ford design with correct black infills and plastic centre caps. The 185/60 R13 tyres have masses of tread remaining. Servo assisted front disc and rear drum brakes bring the car up in a straight line and offer adequate stopping power.

This original South African Ford Escort 1600 Sport was supplied new in October 1980 and spent the majority of its life in SA until being imported to the UK in December 2011. All import duties and levies are settled and the car is UK registered. Having been worked on by respected specialists, this car has been worked on by the best.
The history file further consists of import and duty documents along with the UK V5C registration document. Original South African handbooks and operating guides remain in the file as well as a verification letter from The Sporting Escort Owners Club. KGF Classic Cars are delighted to offer this rare 1600 Sport to market ready for the next discerning enthusiast to appreciate and preserve.
