HISTORY FILE
Registered new on 23rd March 1989, this incredible example boasts provenance of having just two keepers.  A Mr Brown purchased the car new as a birthday present for his wife Sheila.  The vehicle having enjoyed regular use was subsequently used only sparingly following Mr Brown’s passing, however regular maintenance and annual MOT testing was upheld.  The second keeper Mr David Tring purchased the car in November 2002 from Cheffins Auction House, a route of sale deemed to be the least emotionally taxing by Mrs Brown.  With no intention of buying whilst at the auction, Mr Tring was overcome by an episode of spontaneity and decided to purchase this example for nostalgic reasons having owned a similar example when new!  The decision to sell this stunning example is born from his AC Cobra recreation project requiring more time and attention.

The Ford leather wallet contains the original stamped service book along with every handbook, radio guide and dealership literature from point of sale.  Furthermore, the history file contains MOT certificates and invoices to further support the incredible low mileage and even the Cheffins Auction bidding card!  This vehicle is certain to appeal to a collector of modern classics wanting one of the best, most original lowest mileage examples in existence.  The ultimate Ford fans desire.

EXTERIOR
Introduced in September 1981, Ford intended on making just 5,000 RS1600i’s for homologation requirements, but the car sold so well that 8,659 cars were in fact built with just 2,000 for the UK market.  The exterior of this example is finished in Ford Graphite Grey (code 9 1), the equal rarest of colours along with Strato Silver, only 250 of each being produced (Source; RS Owners Club).  The metallic paintwork has a bright gleaming shine and smooth finish, complimented by the correct RS1600i decals on the bonnet, boot lid and sides.  Two small touched in blemishes to the bonnet are visible yet inoffensive, the sunroof has some delamination and the bottom of the rear valance minor paint lift.  The original rear spoiler is perfectly straight and free from common distortion issues.  All further exterior trim sections are in excellent order as is the glass, lights and badges, the glass having original number plate etching present.  A clean engine bay reveals correct factory stickers and identification plates and the twin coil set up remains just as Ford intended.  A superb and now very rare example of the first front wheel drive Ford ever to wear the RS badge!

ENGINE & TRANSMISSION
Fitted with Fords 1600 Compound Value angle Hemispherical chamber (CVH) unit producing a manufacturer quoted 115 BHP.  Mated to the Bosch K Jetronic Fuel Injection System and incorporating deceleration fuel shut off, the instrument orange and red lamps illuminate upon deceleration once the engine is at operating temperature and the engine speed is above 1600rpm.  The car has a top speed of 118mph and achieves 0-60 in 8.7 seconds with an addictive and instantly recognisable rasp from the standard size exhaust.  The gear changes are light and exact, a pleasure to operate.

WHEELS, TYRES & BRAKES
The original 15 X 6 inch RS seven spoke alloy wheels are pristine and correct to the RS1600i model having only one spoke on each wheel stamped with the Ford emblem as opposed to the more common RS Turbo fitments with three stamped spokes.  The spare has minor curb damage. The wheels are shod with matching quality 195/50/R15 tyres all round.  Diagonally split hydraulic circuits with tandem master cylinder, vacuum servo assistance and 9.4” ventilated discs up front bring the car to a halt but far short of modern standards.

HISTORY FILE
Registered new on 5th August 1983, this example has covered just 76,688 miles from new in the hands of five former keepers.  The history file comprises of some previous MOT certificates and some invoices including one dated April 2012 documenting a full cambelt kit and new water pump with less than 5,000 miles covered since.

EXTERIOR
The exterior of this range topping 1100XL is truly exceptional.  Finished in optional Ford metallic Copper Brown (code 7) it has a deep polished shine and a pleasing uniform finish which is outstanding.  There is very minor evidence of paint imperfection to the rear scuttle and a tiny undulation to the finish on the bonnet along with very minimal stone chips which in no way detract from the fantastic appearance of the car.  A wonderfully original and spotlessly clean engine bay still displays the blue pre delivery inspection dot markings to the strut tops and the inner wing chassis number remains unpainted.  Equally the immaculate boot area houses the jack and spare wheel with the original cross ply tyre and factory sticker to the inner wheel tub.  The chrome trim is fantastic, window rubbers are undamaged and all decals are correct and present including the 1100XL wing badges.  Delightful.

INTERIOR
The interior of this cherished Escort 1100XL example has been beautifully preserved.  The XL specific deeply embossed upholstered seats in Tan (code KL) are unworn and absolutely commensurate with the cars incredible low mileage.  Only a very faint marking to the driver’s seat base and a small split to the rear bench top negate the term immaculate.  The headlining is tight and spotless, and the black deep looped pile carpets are in remarkable order having been protected from new by extensive tailor made and colour matched rubber over mats.  This XL model features the GT style larger instrument binnacle to house the extra gauges including oil pressure, temperature, battery indicator and tachometer.  The fascia remains absolutely intact with all simulated wood cappings present and all functions and controls operating perfectly.  The rear view mirror casing has deteriorated from sun damage.  This car really is a beautiful, unspoilt place to be and exactly how Ford intended.

ENGINE & TRANSMISSION
Fitted with Fords 1098cc OHV Crossflow unit, the power output of 55bhp enables a top speed of 83mph and 0-60 in a perhaps sedate 19.4 seconds.  The engines fires up immediately and provides a delightful engine note with more than enough capability to keep up with modern traffic.  The four speed gearbox with synchromesh on all forward gears allows light and precise progression up the range, an absolute joy to operate.  A true reflection of the incredible low mileage this car has covered.

WHEELS, TYRES & BRAKES
The standard pressed steel wheels with original chrome centre caps remain on the car and are shod with quality branded 155 SR 12 radial ply tyres with excellent tread remaining.  The wheels and hub caps are in excellent condition with only very faint age related markings.   The all-round drum brakes feel assured and bring the car up to a straight and prompt halt.

HISTORY FILE
This truly outstanding example was built in the Saarlouis factory in West Germany and registered new in Italy on 19th December 1972 by Ford Concessionaires Furgiuele & Baldelli of Venezia.  This 1100XL compared to the UK 1300XL with subtle differences to include opening front quarter lights and different bright hubcaps not fitted to UK cars.  Just one Italian owner from new, Mr Benito D’arcano enjoyed the car until it travelled to the UK in August 2013.  The original Italian Ford Service booklet is housed in the plastic wallet alongside the Ford Escort vehicle handbook and the ‘La Direzione compartimentale della motorizzazione civile’ (The management of compartmental vehicle registration) displaying many annual vehicle taxation stamps.  The history file further consists of the first UK MOT certificate as well as some Italian paperwork and even a sales brochure!  This immensely desirable and rare model has been beautifully preserved from new and offers real collectable credentials and nostalgic charm.

All tyres retain excellent tread all round. The dual line servo assisted brakes with ventilated 9.4” front discs and 7.0” rear drums bring the car up to a steady, straight and assured halt.
