HISTORY FILE
This 1970 model year Volkswagen Karmann Ghia was manufactured in January 1970 at the Karmann Coachworks in Osnabruck, Germany, where originally artisans made coaches for European nobility. This prime example was imported from Florida to the UK in August 2021 by a seasoned Volkswagen collector, William Ward. His VW collection incorporates the most iconic and immaculate air-cooled models amassed over decades. Frustrated by the overpriced and poorly restored Type 14 examples in the UK, he eventually managed to source a car directly from the US owner and ex Florida State Prosecutor/Vietnam Veteran, Mr Garringer. He too was a gentleman heavily involved in classic Volkswagen circles and the two formed a mutual bond to enable the car to arrive safely in the UK. A huge file of paperwork from renowned Volkswagen and Karmann Ghia specific specialists show the level of expense required in order to create such a beautifully restored example. An original handbook and period sales brochure is included. Fully UK registered and amongst the finest Karmann Ghia’s available, this example will delight in every respect.

HISTORY FILE
This UK example was registered new on the 1st June 1971 by supplying Volkswagen Main Dealer, Birch’s Garage Ltd in Cambridge. Incredibly just three owners and 53,972 miles from new, this very special Dormobile was a factory conversion from new rather than one which was carried out retrospectively. The first owner, a Mr R.C. Cain Esq, purchased the vehicle and paid £1,401 as evidenced by the original order form, sales invoice and payment docket which remarkably have all been kept! Mr Cain loved the Dormobile for 30 years with strict dry storage and dry day usage was paramount and there is even a detailed maintenance log spanning from 1979 to 2000. On recommendation from a friend and fellow Volkswagen fanatic, the second owner approached Mr Cain in 2001 and agreed a deal to buy the vehicle and found that it was every bit as original and incredible as he as been promised. In the hands of the second owner for 19 years, there has been just one change of keeper since.

A vehicle history file makes for wonderful perusal and includes the service record, handbook and very rare VW diagnostic coupon booklet! A Volkswagen Camper and Commercial magazine feature from 2014 featuring this Dormobile not only covers six pages but is also even the centre fold poster! Without question one of the best Type 2 example in existence and seldomly available to the open market. Buy it while you can.

The huge file of invoices amounts to thousands of pounds in parts alone spent on the car whereby all bodywork, paint finishing, mechanical and interior work has been completed professionally and to a very high standard. Parts included to revert the car back to standard should the next owner wish consist of the standard exhaust system, braking components, rear light clusters, front indicators and side repeaters.

The car looks superb and performs as such and represents a fantastic useable example. All servicing is up to date and the car is requiring nothing for immediate enjoyment. There are two sets of keys. All glass is original etched Volkswagen Delodur-1 fitment with decorative chrome surround and even the California Emissions label remains in the side rear window. A twin pipe exhaust has replaced the standard offset single exit item with the lower rear apron neatly modified to accommodate. This classic Beetle Cabriolet looks amazing and is ready for summer fun!

The original black vinyl seats are in pristine order as is the carpeted side walls and rubber floor covering which is protected by expensive woven over mats. The inner roof lining, door cards and padded dash are perfect and the original tiger maple wood grain fascia is as new. Subtle modifications include the quality leather rimmed steering wheel and wooden gear knob and all functions and control operate perfectly including the period radio and clock. The factory Volkswagenwerk West Germany build and emissions labels remain in the driver’s door aperture. The front luggage area with cardboard liner is clean and retains original stickers to the washer bottle, paint code label and front panel body plate. A beautifully presented and reserved interior.

ENGINE & TRANSMISSION
The air-cooled rear mounted horizontally opposed engine produces 48bhp from its 1584cc displacement enabling a top speed of 80mph. The electronic fuel injection fitted as standard enables wonderfully smooth performance and 30mpg. The fully synchronized 4-speed gearbox works perfectly. The engine bay is very clean and retains a clearly legible engine stamp to confirm this as the factory fitted unit. Aside from the replacement exhaust, the standard engine set up remains in place and the engine and hatch cover underside still have factory labels attached.

WHEELS, TYRES & BRAKES
Replacement chromed Beetle wheels and hubcaps look amazing with only very light markings and some tarnishing noticeable to one wheel cap. Brand new Goodyear EfficientGrip 185/65 R15 tyres were fitted in May 2022 and have covered zero miles. Incredibly, the spare wheel remains shod in the factory spare whitewall tyre which has never been used and still retains coloured banding and rubber nobbles! Dual circuit drums front and rear have undergone an overhaul in May 2022 to include the master cylinder and are perfect in operation.

HISTORY FILE
Built in West Germany in post August 1979, this US specification model 1303 remained in its original destination country for just over a year before being shipped to the UK in February 1981 where the car was UK registered and has remained ever since. The engine block number and chassis stamp beneath the rear seat verify this as a 1979 Beetle Cabriolet and the original matching chassis tag is still affixed to the dash rail. The previous long-term owner and member of the VW Cabriolet Owners Club GB bought this Beetle from a family friend in 2005 who had themselves purchased the car in the 1990’s. The history file contains MOT certificates dating back to 1984 as well as service and maintenance invoices. Original literature including handbooks and two sets of keys are present. This outstanding low-mileage example presents incredibly well and drives just as good!

The 5-speed sports gearbox is positive, sturdy and is a joy to use.

WHEELS, TYRES & BRAKES
The original alloy sport wheels are unrestored items and display clearly defined part number stampings and emblems, the definition of which is always lost on refurbishment. Some aged related markings and outer rim scratches are visible but have been left untreated in order to retain originality. Matching replacement premium brand Continental ContiEcoContact3 175/70 R13 tyres have masses of tread. Dual-circuit braking system with servo assistance and ventilated discs offer steady straight line stopping power requiring a firm foot compared to modern equivalents.

HISTORY FILE
Registered new on the 21st June 1985 by Volkswagen Main Dealer, Walton Lodge Garage Ltd in Walton-on-Thames, the car has covered an incredibly low 23,605 miles from new with just four owners, all of whom are traceable. First owner, Miss Tarabzouni, received the car as a gift and owned it until 1993. A sales invoice in the history file dated July 1993 refers to when the car was purchased from a dealership by Mr and Mrs Bryan who paid £5,500 including part exchange of their newer Ford Sierra. Mr and Mrs Bryan owned the car for 24 years until in 2017 the difficult decision to sell was made. A letter in the history file in 2017 from Mr and Mrs Bryan to the new owner, a collector, confirms their history with the car and in their words, “The car is 100% genuine and must be one of the lowest mileage examples in existence”. The car has formed part of one further incredible collection since and is now available to the next custodian to continue its remarkable preservation and enjoyment.

The original V.A.G Service document holder contains all the owner’s manuals, instructions pamphlets and dealer literature as well as the service booklet. The service history file is neatly presented with main dealer and specialist invoices as well as MOT certificates. Completing the history file is two sets of keys and copy V5 documents recording full ownership history. This GTi thoroughly excels in every conceivable way.
