HISTORY FILE
Registered new on 14th September 1995 by Volvo Main Dealer, Mill Garages of Newcastle, this car is one of just 480 Celebration models made and has covered an incredibly low 15,755 miles from new. Purchased brand new by the first lady owner who kept the car until her passing in 2012, the car was only discovered when the house was sold to a family friend, Mr Michael Kirby, who didn’t realise it was in the garage! The family found it too hard to deal with and asked Mr Kirby to dispose of the car however he saw fit. After owning the car for just over a year, he was able to offer it to a friend who happened to be an ex-Volvo Master Technician at the supplying Volvo Main Dealer who worked on 480’s when they are new! Mr Shaun Whitfield bought the car in April 2013 and has owned it ever since. Known as the ‘480 Man’ at Mill Garages of Newcastle, there is nothing Mr Whitfield does not know about these cars and his knowledge and enthusiasm is mighty impressive.

Peace of mind is assured with a Type A service carried out in January 2019 at 15,615 miles and cambelt and water pump change at 8,080 miles, both documented. The history file incudes two Volvo keys and a 480 Celebration sales brochure. This unrestored, unmolested and super low mileage example is one of the best surviving example in existence.

Escort Mk1 Twin Cam

SORRY NOW SOLD – SIMILAR WANTED

An early Mk1 Ford Escort Twin Cam in perfect condition and AVO Club registered.

MODEL HISTORY
Prior to the Advanced Vehicle Operations (AVO) plant at Aveley was opened all Twin Cam Escorts were constructed at Fords Halewood factory. On the same assembly lines as other Escorts, through body assembly, paint and trim areas until the point mechanical components were added. At this stage they would be taken off the line into a separate small workshop where a dozen specially chosen workers were ready to slot in the unique components. Roger Clark took a ‘works’ Twin-Cam, registered XOO262F to its first international rally in April 1968 and Group 2 homologation was achieved on the 1st May 1968 when Ford convinced the authorities that 1000 cars had been made. By the middle of the year Twin-Cams were winning in rallies and on the race track. Queues built up and order books lengthened and most cars once delivered were usually rushed into a workshop, stripped and modified for a particular purpose. A total of 1,263 Twin Cams were produced at Halewood but this early car is one of 883 with the BB49 chassis number and rectangular lights.

EQUIPMENT
Type 49 bodyshell, rectangular headlamps, external bonnet release, black painted grille, front quarter bumpers, flared front wings, strengthened chassis rails, strengthened flitch plates, boot floor stone deflector, foot operated windscreen washers, two-speed wipers, rev counter, speedo, battery condition indicator, fuel and oil pressure gauges, Aeroflow ventilation, sun visors, cigar lighter, ash trays, courtesy light. Rally Equipment Options; Auxiliary touring fuel tank.

EXTERIOR
This early Twin Cam still has its factory Type 49 strengthened bodyshell finished in glorious Ermine White, (Code AB), as detailed on the original chassis and AVO plates. The paintwork is simply stunning and extends to a colour coded impeccably detailed underside. Such is the show winning standard and correctness, this car was invited onto the official AVO Owners Club stand at the 2019 Lancaster Insurance NEC Classic Motor Show. Panel gaps and shut lines are millimetre perfect thanks to work carried out by renowned marque expert, ASM Restorations, now quoting 12 months waiting list for new work. Only fitted to early cars are the original rectangular Lucas headlamps and all other lenses and glass are genuine FoMoCo items. The external lockable bonnet release button, one windscreen washer nozzle mounted in the bonnet are early car features and the starting handle hole is missing the rubber grommet correct for car prior to January 1970. With almost no clues to the special nature of the car other than Twin-Cam badges on the flanks and flared front wheel arches this Club registered, factory correct, very rare and immaculate car is the real deal.

INTERIOR
Simplicity and functional in every respect. An interior perfect to factory specification retaining virtually all original, date correct trim, instrumentation and switchgear. The heavy lateral fluting Black Vinyl, (Code D401), seats with push button controlled tipping are unmarked. The door cards are not reproduction and have the early padded block type stitched effect design, even the carpet is the original six-piece set! All gauges operate including the 140mph speedometer and 8,000rpm rev counter, within the satin chrome finished binnacle requiring calibration. The small metal Ford oval is fitted to the inner passenger-side doorstep. The pristine boot area houses the floor mounted spare wheel on top of the Hardura boot mat, car battery, jack and wheel brace in the fawn muslin bag and a very rare Rally Equipment option, an auxiliary touring fuel tank an extra 9 gallons of fuel, doubling the escort fuel capacity. Perfect in every way.

ENGINE & TRANSMISSION
Taken directly from the Lotus Cortina Mk2, the chain driven DOHC 1558cc engine built by Lotus at Hethel, near Norwich produces 109.5bhp. Lifting the bonnet reveals why these cars are so special with the power plant tilted at an angle to fit and a host of modifications unique to the Twin Cam and to get everything into place. Correct features are seen everywhere from the engine stabiliser bar unique to the Twin Cam and plenum drain on the bulkhead to the cheese wedge washer bottle and three-eared oil cap. A reassuring sight is the original AVO plate or colour plate and chassis plate, not reproduction items. The suspension top plate also has the chassis number visible. A Ford Type-3 four-speed gearbox with three-rail shift mechanism and remote change, also known as the 2000E box, offers precise crisp changes and the hydraulic clutch is light with the correct combined brake/clutch master cylinder mounted in the engine bay.

WHEELS, TYRES & BRAKES
Lotus Cortina wide steel wheels fill the arches nicely measuring 5.5x13in and topped with immaculate chrome hubcaps. Period as new Dunlop SP Aquajet 165 HR13 tyres are fitted to all five immaculate rims. Stopping a Twin Cam is an impressive standard brake setup. Front discs and larger rear drums as fitted to the Capri 3.0 and later AVO Escorts are pressurised by a Girling Powerstop remote servo located on the inner wing in place of a standard Escort battery tray. This early Twin Cam is also fitted with the rare brake pipe stone guards.

HISTORY FILE
Built at the Halewood factory in October 1968 this early BB49 chassis number Twin Cam is registered with the Ford AVO Club and certified as a rare surviving example still with its original Type 49 bodyshell. HISTORY FILE
Supplied new by Ford Main Dealer, Evans Halshaw of Chester, on 8th May 2007, this example has covered a remarkably low 18,610 miles from new.  The first owner was a mature lady, Mrs Crew, who kept the car for 11 years before gifting it to her Grandson in June 2018, both of whom have kept the car 100% standard.  The exceptionally low mileage is fully verified both in the full Ford service history and every MOT certificate since the very first in 2010.  Thankfully having avoided the clutches of the boy racers and modifying scene, this example is in exceptional order.  The Ford zip up document wallet houses the original handbook and service book which has five Ford stamped entries with the most recent service in November 2018 at 13,094 miles at Peoples Ford.  A separate folder contains all Ford service invoices and receipts, and all security code cards are in the wallet with two Ford keys.  Representing the next generation of collectable fast Fords, this desirable Colorado Red example will delight any Ford fan wishing to find one of the best preserved and unmolested cars.

EXTERIOR
Finished in stunning optional Ford Performance Blue, (Code H2), the leading colour choice of many Ford ST and RS variants and the must have choice for the ST220.  Commensurate with the incredibly low miles covered under avid enthusiast ownership, the paintwork boasts a brilliant deep gloss shine and superb uniform finish.  Only the closest scrutiny will reveal faint markings and some stone chips to the front, none to detract from the cars impressive appeal.  The original Ford glass has been chassis etched and there is slight delamination and stone chips to the front screen.  Ford main dealer number plates are fitted and all badges and trim sections are well preserved with no discolouration.  Muscular styling and twin tail pipes hint towards the sporting prowess of this performance tourer.

INTERIOR
The interior of this remarkable example is in spotless condition and exactly as Ford intended.  The Ebony Leather upholstery, (Code EV), is beautifully clean and free from undue wear or damage.  Minor markings to the driver’s seat bolster and scuffs to the driver’s ST tread plate are barely worthy of mention.  The body hugging Recaro front seats are immensely comfortable while holding the occupants firmly in place, even upon the most spirited drive!  Tailored Ford rubber floor mats have protected the carpets from new and the headlining is flawless.  All controls and functions are exactly as Ford intended even down to the factory fitted Sony 6CD stereo system.  The leather trimmed steering wheel, gearknob and soft finish fascia are pristine.  Truly exceptional and unquestionably an enthusiasts car.

ENGINE & TRANSMISSION
Developed extensively by Ford’s Special Vehicle Engineering (SVE), the 3.0i DOHC V6 24V Duratec powerplant pleased Ford’s engineers by surpassing the ST220’s namesake with an actual power output of 223bhp.  Coupled with impressive maximum torque figures of 285Nm at 4900rpm, a top speed of 151mph and 0-60 in 6.8 seconds was achieved.  Jeremy Clarkson whilst originally testing the ST220 remarked, “Every time I drive one of these cars, I ask myself why do we buy anything else?”  The engine bay is spotlessly clean with all factory labels and stickers intact, and the only modification specified by the previous mature owner is an expensive, quality and very discreet Milltek exhaust system that is visually very close to standard whilst emitting a delicious burble.  The six-speed gearbox is light and precise with a sporting feel.

WHEELS, TYRES & BRAKES
The standard ST220 18in 16 spoke alloy wheels are virtually perfect and the beautiful centre caps are as new.  Quality matching Michelin 225/40 R18 tyres all round have excellent tread remaining.  The braking system featuring a host of electronic assistance programs offers superb stopping power.

HISTORY FILE
Supplied new on 1st March 2004 by Ford Main Dealer, Thornbury Motors Limited of Bristol, this example has been truly cherished by just three mature keepers and covered a mere 37,212 miles from new.  Despite the minimal mileage covered, servicing has been carried out regularly with 10 Ford main dealer and specialist stamps displayed in the service record, the most recent entry being a major service carried out in April 2019 at 36,897 miles with a supporting invoice in the history file for £929.43 for the servicing and maintenance work.

The history file further consists of previous MOT certificates along with invoices and receipts to fully document the low mileage and the conscientious upkeep.  Two original Ford keys with codes tags are present along with the full book pack in the Ford zip wallet and all dealership literature and security code cards.  A highly regarded and appreciating modern classic Ford presented and maintained to an excellent standard.
