Ford Escort MK1 1300E

SORRY NOW SOLD – SIMILAR WANTED

An unspoilt and rare Mk1 Ford Escort 1300E Campaign Model with only 7,490 miles.

MODEL HISTORY
The model’s name 1300E was born from a simple concept, a 1300cc machine with high-class accoutrements that resulted from a demand by Ford bigwigs for a luxury Escort, the ‘E’ was to stand for Executive. Ford’s specialist plant at Aveley was ailing with less than worthy profits so the development of the 1300E was the perfect opportunity to bolster its Advanced Vehicle Operations (AVO) division. Primarily based on the Escort GT specification, a 1300E started life as an Escort Sport from the Halewood Plant where it was given a slam panel data plate reading SPCL CAMPAIGN (Special Campaign) and fitted with a rectangular headlamp panel, upgraded cloth interior and painted in the specified colour. All but complete, the cars were then shipped to Aveley where an assembly facility added the 1300E extra equipment and trim. Workers who would usually be building the RS1600 and Mexico turned their hands to the 1300E which was assembled on a separate line. All pre-October 1973 1300E’s were completed at Aveley and helped to keep AVO viable, these cars being referred to as the Series One. The later cars or the Series Two were fully finished at Halewood and production finally ended on the 16th December 1974 with 6,768 two-door and 4,022 four-door cars built, according to Owner’s Club records.

EQUIPMENT
All steel welded integral construction, safety glass all round, anti-burst locks, bright metal ornamentation, flared wheel arches, rectangular Lucas sealed head lights, Lucas auxiliary lamps, side repeat flashes on front wings, vinyl roof, bright full width bumpers, special motif on rear pillars, door mounted exterior mirror, black rear panel with surround mouldings, special sound deadening pack, bright metal wheel rim embellishers, triple bodyside stripe, boot mat, two speed wipers, tachometer, Genuine wood veneer finish to upper and lower fascia, glove box, instrument binnacle, doors and rear quarter cappings. Factory options; Metallic paint.

EXTERIOR
Finished in factory optional Amber Gold Metallic, (Code L), this example has covered a genuine 7,490 miles from new and is presented in outstanding unspoilt condition. The paintwork is near flawless having benefitted from a professional repaint in 2008. Photographs taken prior show the car in superb order with just some minor cosmetic deterioration from the cars long term storage. All panels are factory fitment and no structural repairs have ever been undertaken nor required. 1300E aficionados will recognise this Aveley assembled Series One by the fixed side rear windows as opposed to the openers fitted to the Series Two and the super eagle-eyed experts will note the incorrect 1300E wing badges. The correct badges for a Series One would read only 1300 but the first owner changed these as he wanted the car to be recognised unmistakably as a 1300E! Underneath the car is outstanding with the correct original slant rear shock absorbers in black to denote Ford units rather than the blue Armstrong parts as well as the black anti-roll bars and even the cardboard undertray which is long lost on most cars! All trim sections are original and in superb order with some very light tarnishing to some chrome pieces. A benchmark car for anyone wanting to recreate a factory correct Series One 1300E.

INTERIOR
A interior every inch as expected with the mere 7,490 miles covered. The ribbed cloth interior in Tan, (Code K1) is fitted as standard on the luxury 1300E and are in fantastic order. The wall-to-wall cut pile carpets, putty headlining and real wood veneer panels are all original with slight lineage to the passenger wood facia. All equipment and functions operate and the experts checklist will be ticked with correct smaller glovebox knob for earlier cars and incredibly there is even the cleverly concealed original ice scraper sat inside the centre console, long since lost or snapped on most cars! Inside the boot area is the original hessian bag with grey jack and black plastic inner light cluster protectors and lack of boot lamp, all correct for earlier cars. Even PDI tags are still affixed with string inside the boot area! Window etching to the factory glass is present along with the Triplex Hotline sticker in the rear screen. As close as you are likely to get to a 1973 showroom fresh 1300E interior.

ENGINE & TRANSMISSION
Ford took the 1300cc Crossflow engine from the GT model which developed 72bhp and achieved 0-60mph in 13.3 seconds whilst reaching a top speed of almost 100mph. The factory fitted engine sits in a beautifully clean and unspoilt engine bay with all factory stickers, plates and labels and the original chassis stamping to the inner wing. The factory data plate reads SPCL CAMPAIGN (Special Campaign) which is correct for a Series One car. Originality even extends to the factory wing/slam panel seam welds, genuine Ford hose clips and washer bottle. The under bonnet insulation pads have been replaced. The four-speed manual gearbox is light and precise.

WHEELS, TYRES & BRAKES
Five-inch sports styled road wheels are standard 1300E specification in silver fox with satin black inner sections as well as the rim embellishers, aluminium centre caps with black middle/chrome ring and the UNF chrome domed wheel nuts. Premium brand Michelin Energy tyres are fitted to all road wheel and original seekers with be delighted to learn that all five factory fitted Michelin ZX tyres in excellent condition have been retained having covered such low miles! GT-spec disc brakes were fitted to the front of the 1300E and this factory standard system feature servo assistance and even the original brake fluid reservoir cap reading ‘use FoMoCo brake fluid’.

HISTORY FILE
Built in March 1973 and registered new on the 1st August 1973, the car was supplied by Ford Main Dealers, Invicta Motors Ltd of Margate and Ramsgate. The first registered keeper was Mrs Skinner followed by her husband who owned the car until 2007. When the third owner bought the car from Mr Skinner it had covered just 3,450 miles! In 2008 a full re-paint was undertaken by professional experts, Mabel Coachworks in London. The history file is beautifully organised and presented with many photos of the car prior to the repaint proving how undamaged and rust-free it was. The history file traces all five owners in total and the large file contains the original handbook, tax disc holder from the selling dealer, invoices, previous MOT certificates, condition reports and agreed valuations. KGF Classic Cars are immensely proud to have acquired what is certainly one of the best, low mileage Mk1 1300E’s in existence.

Ford Sierra RS500 Cosworth

SORRY NOW SOLD – SIMILAR WANTED

A factory original Ford Sierra RS500 Cosworth with only 21,523 miles.

MODEL HISTORY
Five hundred extra special examples of the 150 mph Ford Sierra RS Cosworth went on sale in Britain on August 1st 1987. This more powerful ‘evolution’ model was introduced to allow Ford to develop the original limited production run of 5,000 needed to allow the car to be homologated for International Touring Car Racing in Group A. The delicate bottom engine tray often lost after the first service remains fitted too. The engine runs and drives impeccably and has had a major service in February 2021. The crisp 4-speed gearbox is a delight.

WHEELS, TYRES & BRAKES
Factory fitted to this XL model are the rare ‘slotted Rostyle’ wheels which according to the Capri Mk1 bible, (Factory Original Ford Capri Mk1 by James Taylor), were used by Ford sporadically and only for a brief period in the early 1970’s. Named so as they had a narrow slot between the main spokes as opposed to the far for common half-spoke, the wheels display the correct silver finish with black infills. All tyres including the spare are fitted with matching Goodyear Duragrip 165/80 R13 tyres with masses of tread. The optional servo assisted brakes with front discs and rear drums bring the car up straight and true and have been overhauled.

HISTORY FILE
Built in December 1971 at Halewood and registered new on 1st January 1972 by Ford Main Agents, H.E. Nunn & Co Limited of Ipswich, this pre-facelift Mk1 Capri was ordered new by a Mr F.H. Last. Factory options were specified along with the Custom Plan XL Pack, and as Mr Last intended to tow his holiday Caravan, he stipulated the Heavy-Duty suspension and towing pack from Ford’s Factory Special Vehicle Orders department. This was only fitted to the 3 litre Capri models. Remarkably Mr Last owned the car for over 27 years until April 1999 when it was sold to a second short term owner. Between March 2000 and December 2015, the car was owned by husband and wife, Mr and Mrs Reeve, and it was only upon her husband’s passing in 2015 that Mrs Reeve decided she would sell the car, but the stipulation was that the Capri had to go to someone who would cherish it. Capri Mk1 Owners Club member, Terry Haynes, was fortunate enough to have the opportunity to buy this unique car and it has formed part of his collection ever since, sitting alongside his early 4-speed 2.8 Injection and concours Capri Laser. An avid Capri enthusiast, his passion and knowledge of these iconic cars is very impressive.

The history file is comprehensive with the dealer document wallet housing the handbooks, dealership point of sale literature, and even original service book. A further substantial file contains service invoices, maintenance receipts, previous MOT certificates and an original sales brochure for the pre-facelift Ford Capri range. Even the factory supplied CEM stamped ignition key, P.J stamped petrol cap key and FoMoCo door key remain with the car, a delight to sticklers for detail! This iconic, unspoilt and desirable Early Capri is very special.

Originality seekers will be pleased to see factory ‘Laser’ decals, registration etching to the glass and the supplying Ford dealer number plates and tax disc holder. This is a truly beautiful Capri and a real show stopper.

INTERIOR
The term time warp is often overused but entirely justified with the interior of this exceptionally low mileage example. The colour matched carpeting and headlining are both immaculate and the dashboard is completely intact with no cracks whatsoever. The parcel shelf is pin straight and untouched and factory stickers remains attached to the boot floor. An iconic and instantly familiar classic Ford interior.

ENGINE & TRANSMISSION
The factory fitted 1593cc OHC ‘pinto’ unit with single venturi carburettor is famed for it’s robust and simplistic mechanics. The engine is quiet and performs brilliantly with a top speed of 99mph and 0-60mph time of 13.0 seconds. The engine bay is beautifully clean with factory stickers and plates displayed and even bright factory markings to the cam cover, long lost or at least very faded on most examples! The 5-speed gearbox is light and works through the gears precisely, and the clutch feels positive.

WHEELS, TYRES & BRAKES
This Capri Laser remains fitted with the correct RS-style four-spoke alloy wheels which are in superb order with no damage and defined part number and ford emblem stampings to the spokes, a feature lost upon heavy restored rims. Pirelli 185/70 R13 tyres to all four corners have plenty of tread remaining. The hydraulic dual-line servo-assisted front discs and rear drums stop the car quickly and in a straight line.

HISTORY FILE
Factory build records confirm that this special edition run-out model Capri Laser was built in February 1986 at the Ford factory in Saarlouis, Germany. Registered new on 1st August 1986 by Ford Main Dealer, Selwood garages Ltd of South Sheilds, this example has covered a fully verified 6,680 miles from new with just three keepers. First owner, Mrs Norma Wallace, owned the car until 1993 when it was sold to Mr John Chilton. After 19 years of ownership the car was then sold to the third and last registered keeper, Mr Anthony Rear.

The handbooks, guides, dealership literature and original stamped service booklet are present and the history file is able to verify the mileage with a collection of previous MOT certificates and invoices dating back to the early 1990’s. In May 2020 and at 6,390 miles, a documented major service was carried out with all fluids changed including brake fluid, gearbox oil and differential oil. At the same time a cambelt and water pump change was carried out with supporting invoice. Completing the history file are two sets of keys and an original Ford Capri brochure featuring the Laser model. Representing a superb and highly prized example of the final edition Capri, this wonderful 1.6 Laser is ready for its next appreciative owner and would delight any Ford enthusiast or collector.
