Kawasaki KH400-A3

SORRY NOW SOLD – SIMILAR WANTED

A legendary award winning Kawasaki KH400-A3 in stunning original condition.

MODEL HISTORY
The Kawasaki KH400-A3 was part of the iconic Kawasaki ‘Triple’ range produced from 1968 to 1980 with motorcycles ranging from 250-750cc, the latter more powerful models being nicknamed ‘widow makers’ owing to Kawasaki’s penchant for producing large engine bikes but still with skinny tyres, flimsy frames and inadequate brakes! Renowned as the ultimate all-rounder for performance and handling, the KH400-A3 was a rare and expensive machine with just 448 UK examples sold (source Classic & Motorcycle Mechanics).

EQUIPMENT
Twin-loop steel cradle frame, telescopic front forks, twin rear shocks, chrome mudguards front and rear, chrome side repeaters, speedometer, tachometer, capacitor discharge ignition (CDI), turn signal switch, headlight switch, dimmer switch, engine stop switch, oil light, high beam light, horn, rear footrests, fuel valve, lockable fuel cap, centre stand, side stand, rear grab bar, steering lock, seat lock, neutral indicator.

EXTERIOR
Finished in Candy Dark Green, one of only two colour options available for the KH400-A3 model, this matching numbers UK example has gained award winning status and has featured in various publications and enthusiast books. The pristine factory original paintwork catches the sunlight in an amazing almost psychedelic manner, almost impossible to replicate on a repainted example. Beautifully detailed in every respect but not to the detriment of originality, all components are in remarkable order and the chassis and engine numbers clearly visible for inspection. Likewise, the almost ornate asymmetrically arranged three branch exhaust system displays clear part number stampings with only the faintest pitting to a very small section. Lifting the seat reveals further delights such as the original and complete toolkit in the plastic pouch and all manufacturer stickers and notices clearly intact. The seat, grips and rubbers can all be described as excellent. A truly exceptional example of the Kawasaki’s that took the 1970’s biking world by storm.

ENGINE & TRANSMISSION
The three cylinder two-stroke air-cooled engine has a 401cc displacement and produces 38bhp with a claimed top speed of 101mph. Features such as the capacitor discharge ignition (CDI) remain exactly as the manufacturer intended. The 5-speed transmission incorporating primary drive by straight cut gear and wet multiplate clutch operates perfectly. It is crucial to emphasise that this collector’s example is not just a show piece but has been maintained and importantly used as intended in dry conditions, almost certainly with a guaranteed smile on the riders face experiencing the ‘Triple Tingle’ at the top end of the post 7,000rpm power band!

WHEELS, TYRES & BRAKES
This KH400-A3 retains its beautiful original chrome wire wheels to retain the classic look. In exceptional condition, the wheels are shod in premium quality Dunlop K82 tyres of size 3.25-18 and 3.50-18 (front and rear) with masses on tread remaining and no cracking whatsoever. The braking system incorporates a brake fluid reservoir with viewing level window and single 11” front disc and 7” rear drum to bring the bike up safely.

HISTORY FILE
Registered new on the 2nd August 1976, this early KH400-A3 is one of 6,800 produced and just 448 sold in the UK. Having covered just 5,337 miles under the ownership of devoted enthusiasts, this incredible bike has been preserved in amazing condition and exactly as Kawasaki intended. The previous keeper used and enjoyed the bike in dry conditions and kept it as part of a vast and almost overwhelming collection of mainly 1970’s Japanese bikes and mopeds.
Absolutely all credentials are ticked with this low mileage, matching numbers UK example. The correct handbook inside the storage compartment is amazingly still present as is the Kawasaki dealer leather key fob. This actual bike is also featured on the front cover of The Kawasaki Triples Bible by Alastair Walker and period literature is included with the sale. Renowned as being the Triple Series bike that Kawasaki ‘sorted without sanitising’, this KH400-A3 is an absolute must for the avid collector where inspection and trial will not disappoint. A rare unmissable opportunity indeed!

The boot area is pristine and houses the factory fitted space-saver spare wheel and correct jack and the dealer supplied tax disc holder is included.

ENGINE & TRANSMISSION
In December 1995 when the vehicle had covered just 1,150 miles the first owner instructed the professional services of Mark Burley at Grove Garage and the highly respected Ahmed Bayjoo, ex Ford WRC development program guru. The Cosworth YBT engine warrants little introduction and brief upgrades include items such as; genuine RS500 inlet manifold, throttle body, intercooler and exhaust manifold, gas flowed and ported head with bronze valve guides, WRC triple layer head gasket set, WRC spec oil breather system, Group A coil and motorsport leads, Mahle motorsport bearings throughout, 8X 803 Bosch Dark Green injectors, Garratt T4 turbo with uprated bearings and washers, long studded block, lightened and balanced fly wheel, Webber L8 Ford Motorsport ECU and Ahmed spec cams. The permanent Ferguson four wheel drive system with 34/66% front/rear power split mated to a MT 75 5-speed gearbox with an AP Racing 6 paddle clutch and heavy duty pressure plate.

Koni uprated shocks and Ahmed Bayjoo spec springs combined with an Ahmed/SCS fully rose jointed WRC Group A 6 degree rear beam is a phenomenal and highly sought after package.

HISTORY FILE
Built at the Rheine Assembly Plant in Germany and registered new on the 8th December 1992 by Ford RS Dealer, Grays of Guilford, making this model one of the highly sought after 2500 large turbo homologation specials. A comprehensive service history in the hands of just two former keepers and previous MOT certificates warrants the low mileage of 16,805. A letter dated 7th March 2016 from Grove Garage confirms regular return visits for servicing and Ahmed Bayjoo’s extensive involvement. The current owner is a well respected fulltime professional detailer. All dealer literature, handbooks and spare keys are included with invoices neatly filed in an A4 folder. Very, very special and suitable for the most discerning collector.

INTERIOR
The interior of this remarkable example is beautifully clean and factory standard in every respect.  The Tracer/Raven cloth trim (code LV) is clean and largely wear free with some fading evident, and a miniscule hole in the driver’s bolster is apparent, but virtually undetectable.  The colour-keyed velour carpeting and perforated headlining are both pristine.  All switchgear is functional and the soft finish dashboard undamaged.  The bank of three switches to the right of the steering wheel, whilst fully functional, have come loose from the secure housing.  The header mounted digital clock retains the correct grey LCD display and the original working Ford radio/cassette (model ESRT 32 PS) remains in place.  The hugely difficult to source original trimmed parcel shelf is intact, straight and complete with the correct rubber hangers.  Simple, sporting and superb fun!

WHEELS, TYRES & BRAKES
Sporty and unique pearl white full wheel covers are standard specification on the 1.4S and all four are in pristine undamaged condition.  Matching Michelin 165/65 R13 have masses of tread remaining and the spare wheel is correctly housed below the boot floor where factory stickers remain displayed.  The dual line servo assisted brakes with front discs and self-adjusting 7.0” rear drums offer ample stopping power.

HISTORY FILE
Supplied new by Ford main agents and registered on the 14th May 1987, this superb example has covered just 44,106 miles with only three former keepers.  The rarity of this 1.4S model is immense with a reputed mere 18 licensed as at the last quarter of 2014 (source www.howmanyleft.co.uk).  Considered the lesser sporting model against the XR2 at the time, this car now represents a scarcely surviving collectors piece and must not be missed.

HISTORY FILE
Built on the 18th November 1959 this example is one of the most iconic of all the Minis as it was built within the first three months of the public launch date of the 26th August 1959 as confirmed by the Heritage Motor Centre.  These early built cars possess a uniqueness with individual build differences before full scale production, standardisation and the ‘facelift’ in October 1960.  With only three owners from new this example has a fascinating history all catalogued in the history file.  The first owner enjoyed the car for six years before a Mr Mucklejohn purchased the car for his son, Ian, in 1965.  Only used by Ian for two years before being hit head-on by a Ford Cortina.  Fortunately Ian suffered only minor injuries and even kept the newspaper extract dated the 10th February 1967 where the Cortina driver was fined £10 with a licence endorsement!  A Front End number of FE68802 confirms dating of August 1960 to the body after the repairs.  While the vehicle was being repaired Ian purchased a Hillman Imp which he preferred to drive so once the Mini was returned it lay idle and unused.  In 1999 after 32 years of being off the road Ian decided to have the vehicle restored to ‘as new’ condition with an invoice presented for the privilege of £14,726.90.  After 50 years of ownership KGF Classic Cars were delighted to sell the car to the third keeper, Mr Robin Guest who has now decided to sell in order to concentrate on his primary passion, motorcycles.

A history file comprising of wonderful period artefacts including letters, photos and period literature are included along with a certificate from the 1959 Mini Register & Mini Magazine identifying this example as a surviving 1959 Mini and thus formed part of the Mini 50th anniversary celebrations.

All GT instrumentation is functional and period although modern touches such as a 80mm Elliott revolution counter with a chrome bezel improve accuracy and clarity. A Radiomobile is fitted and both front and rear compartments are clean.

ENGINE & TRANSMISSION
The rear mounted engine and transmission has been extensively worked on by Richard Winter, proprietor of Europa leading experts, Banks Service Station. The rebuilt Renault engine has been specified at 120bhp bringing it in line with the ‘big valve’ Special. Having a capacity of 1647cc, running twin 40 Weber carbs and breathing through a stainless exhaust, fun is expected! A 5-speed conversion was again carried out by Europa Engineering at considerable cost with upgraded components and a new uprated clutch but smooth operation requires practice with a sharp clutch and close ratio gearbox.

WHEELS, TYRES & BRAKES
Period Minilite 13” alloy wheels with Lotus chrome caps are unmarked and shod in Yokohama A048 175/60 R13 tyres. Disc brakes upfront and drums to the rear bring this nimble lightweight car to an assured halt.

HISTORY FILE
Registered on the 1st August 1971 this Lotus S2 has embarked on a transformation with its previous owner lasting some 18 years. Invoices from industry respected specialists will reveal the detail and expense lavished on this car and help prove the ‘no expense spared’ mentality to this special recreation. A glowing feature in the February 2016 Classic Cars magazine is included along with the A4 file of eye watering invoices. A superb class leader.
