Gilera T50 Touring

SORRY NOW SOLD – SIMILAR WANTED

A trailblazing and collectable UK Gilera T50 Touring Moped.

MODEL HISTORY
On the 15th December 1971 the Tory Transport Minister, John Peyton, changed British two-wheeler licensing regulations and the infamous ‘sixteener law’ forced all 16-year old motorcyclists onto mopeds. The law was intended to force novice bikers onto 50cc shopping bikes and reduce accident statistics, but demand remained and manufacturers produced more powerful models. Equipped with pedals, added as a token gesture to comply with the law, the sports moped arrived dubbed ‘sixteener specials’. The historic Gilera marque was founded in 1909 near Monza in Italy by Count Guiseppe Gilera. In the 1950’s, Gilera had huge success and won multiple 500cc world championships as well as several TT wins. Gilera Touring and Trials sports mopeds were imported to the UK from mid-1972 and were built with an air of quality, and the general attention to detail and finish was considered to be first class.

EQUIPMENT
Double cradle tubular frame, front suspension double acting Ceriani hydraulic forks, rear suspension with swinging arm and hydraulic shock absorbers, stainless steel INOX front and rear mudguards, 1.5 imp. Gallon fuel tank, light alloy wheel hubs, chrome exhaust, Gilera speedometer, headlight with lights-on indicator, rear lamp, electromagnetic horn, engine cut-out button, fuel valve, rear foot pegs, Gilera embossed dual seat with pillion strap.

A UK registered bike from new, this funky UK Gilera T50 Touring Moped embodies the crazed 1970’s Sports Moped phenomenon. The double tubular steel frame is sturdy and the fuel tank boasts an eye catching deep metallic red shine and with immaculate Gilera decals. There are two very small micro-blisters in the paint to the top of the fuel tank. Matching red side panels look superb and wear ’50 Touring’ model designation decals. Bright chrome work and polished stainless steel set this example amongst a rare surviving group and even Aprilia head and tail light lenses remain fitted. The original dual seat with pillion strap and Gilera embossed logo is in amazing condition. An iconic machine and ready to transport you back to your youth.

ENGINE & TRANSMISSION
The single cylinder two-stroke 49cc air cooled engine produces 4.2 bhp at 5500rpm with a quoted top speed of 40mph. The engine casings and components are beautifully clean with the engine number stamping clearly visible. The correct Dell’Orto carburettor remains fitted with manual pull-up and twist choke. The Silenziatori Lafranconi Frankfurter exhaust remains fitted with the logo crystal clear and a mirror chrome finish. A four-speed foot change transmission with chain drive is standard fitment.

WHEELS, TYRES & BRAKES
The Radaelli chrome rims and spoked wheels are in beautiful condition and are fitted with 2.50-17 front and 3.00-17 rear tyres. Drum brakes front and rear provide adequate braking of this sports moped but do require a firm application!

HISTORY FILE
This fantastic Gilera T50 Touring Moped was UK registered from new with a registration date of the 1st August 1974. The previous owner having purchased it in 2020 has displayed the bike in his garage showroom amongst an impressive collection of Yamaha ‘Fizzy’s’, Gilera’s, Garelli’s and several classic cars. Collectables: Original Cooper Sports 500 launch press pack, Coventry Evening Telegraph dated October 4th 2000 with Lulu and last Mini at Longbridge.

EXTERIOR
Absolute Mini Cooper Sport 500 perfection is found here with this example being unregistered and covered just 8 delivery miles! In one of four colours designated for the 500, 110 cars were produced in Solar Red (Code WNR), the second rarest colour after Anthracite of which there were just two fewer produced. Stored in an air chamber from new, the factory paintwork is flawless and every panel pin straight with no markings at all. Incredible preservation of all trim, rubbers, chrome, and lights almost defies belief and retains a pinnacle level most could never aspire to. The underside follows suit in being utterly pristine with every nut, bolt clip and even bright coloured PDI markings and delicate labels intact. The ultimate collector piece for the Mini connoisseur and the perfect blueprint.

INTERIOR
These late Mini Coopers were lavishly trimmed, particularly so in the final ‘500’ celebration model. The full leather interior in Black and Nickle Silver, (Code WNP), is in showroom condition. Thankfully, this incredible example has remained in perfect ambient conditions away from elements such as UV light. As importantly, the metal plaque fitted to the inner glove box lid states, ‘This Mini is one of the last 500 built to the original Sir Alec Issigonis Design’. As new.

ENGINE & TRANSMISSION
The final production cars utilised the 1275cc unit mated to Multi-Point fuel Injection to lower emissions and noise and increased performance. Spotless and the benchmark for anyone wishing to recreate a 100% accurate engine bay, there isn’t a single clip, bracket, sticker, plate or label out of place and even oils and fluids added at the Longbridge plant remain! The car is fully operational and drivable, yet for obvious mileage preservation purposes, we have resisted the urge to take a drive!

WHEELS, TYRES & BRAKES
The original 13in sports style alloy wheels which were standard on the Cooper Sport 500 are as new, so too are the centre caps. The factory fitted Dunlop SP Sport 3000 175/50/R13 tyres remain fitted with no degradation. The unused spare wheel and Pirelli Cinturato CN54 tyre with factory chalk marks rest alongside the original jack and Mini pouch in the immaculate boot area which still displays factory date stickers! Even the foam shroud remains around the rear number plate light cable which was lost on most cars within days or even removed on PDI! The servo assisted brakes incorporating front discs and rear drums retain factory linings and consumables.

HISTORY FILE
The build date of this example is recorded on the Cooper Sport 500 Register as the 20th of September 2000 and is the 266th last VIN allocated to a Mini. Number 235 in the register, this car is one of just four known examples to remain unregistered. Source of information is the Rover Mini Cooper Sport 500 Register, (coopersport500register.com), whereby Registrar Andy Mynott confirms that although the records state five cars are known to be unregistered, one of the five has since been registered with the DVLA and the website is to be updated.

Number 235 was supplied new by Rover Main Dealer, Quicks of Coventry, and the new vehicle order form made out to a Mrs Maureen Hartley confirms the purchase price of £10,995. Such was the hype and fanfare around the final 500 cars, demand far outstripped supply and negotiation on price was out of the question! A speculative purchase, the car was not to be registered and this has remained the case. Having covered just 8 miles from new the car was offered for sale in 2015 when it was sold by a classic Mini specialist to a private collector, Mr Trevor Townson, who has owned to car ever since and had it carefully stored in an air chamber. Collectors and enthusiasts alike will be pleased to see
documentation such as the Mini Assembly Classic Final Audit Sheet, build specification print-outs and PDI documentation. Further foresight upon initial purchase of the car saw the first owner obtaining now highly collectable items such as the official Launch Press Information packs, special edition brochures and postcards. Also retained with the car are the Special Edition Gift Boxes with all items stored in the stylish Mini corrugated card boxes as well as the authenticity certificate ‘Certifiable Fun’ signed by John Cooper, Designer and Mini Driver and Kevin Howe, Chief Executive of MG Rover Group.

The ultimate blueprint for anyone wishing to restore or recreate another 500 to 100% accuracy. A fascinating car.

HISTORY FILE

Wanting to preserve this celebratory purchase, the expensive Supagard protection treatment option was taken out, the document for which is with the car. A Certificate of Authenticity signed by Peter Stevens, Chief Designer MG, confirms this example to be number 1351 from a global production of just 1600 Limited Edition models and 500 for the UK. The car remained with Mr Jones for 21 years until sold by KGF Classic Cars to the only other owner, Mr Kemp.

Servicing and maintenance has been documented and a specialist invoice in the history file for £929.89 in 2023 refers to a full service and change of cambelt and water pump. The original handbook, manuals and service book are present in the MG wallet and there are two original keys with remote fobs and dealership keyrings. A file of paperwork includes the collectable and valuable 80th Anniversary TF release brochure. This pristine MG TF is without question one of the best-preserved original examples in existence with provenance to match. Firmly one for the MG connoisseur.

The racy ‘Aero’ body-styling kit and chunky sports trim sections are all standard ST150 fitment and only the correct slanted Mountune badges and MR200 decals reveal the true nature of this prized car. The factory fitted glass has some delamination and dealer supplied number plates are fitted. The underside and wheel apertures are super clean and original, the car having always been garaged. It is clear to see that this rare example has been pampered rather than tracked.

INTERIOR
Inside this sporting hot Ford are a pair of body-hugging ST-branded sports front seats finished in Ebony leather and Performance Blue Wire, (Code EW). The entire cabin space, seats and trims can only be described as first class. Bright red ST emblems to the seats, steering wheel and sill scuff plates help distinguish this model. The fanatical owner purchased Mountune Lux carpet set to include the boot mat and the Mountune air freshener remains unopened still in its clear packaging! An expensive upgraded sound system with a removable quick release JL subwoofer to the boot completes the package.

ENGINE & TRANSMISSION
Fitted with the Ford 2.0 litre Duratec engine with the desirable and very expensive MR200 conversion, the power output is quoted as 200bhp at 7000rpm. Expect the factory standard ST150 statistics of 129mph and 0-60 in 7.9 seconds to be obliterated! The engine bay is spotless and not only displays all the factory stickers, panels stamps and clear chassis number stamping, but Mountune upgrades also. The Durashift 5-speed close-ratio manual transmission is wonderfully tight and precise, perfect for quick and enthusiastic changes!

WHEELS, TYRES & BRAKES
Unique ST design 17” alloy wheels show no curb damage and all Ford badged centre caps are as new. Matching Goodyear Eagle F1 tyres of size 205/40 ZR17 are fitted with masses of even tread showing. Anti-lock brakes (ABS) with upgraded EBC grooved and drilled discs to all four wheels are gripped by powerful calipers finished in Ford Performance Racing Red.

HISTORY FILE
Supplied new by Dagenham Motors Ltd on the 7th January 2005 this example is fitted with the Mountune MR200 conversion at great expense and is one of just 74 made! Importantly official Mountune Certificates are included in the massive history file to validate the authenticity of the upgrade. Owned by just four former keepers, the last Mr Kelly for eight years who is a renown expert in the Fiesta ST community. A neatly and chronically filed A4 folder details the comprehensive service history with the last stamped entry in June 2025 at 69,833 miles using only genuine Ford parts. Also include are Mountune warranty cards, previous MOT certificates and MR200 validation paperwork. The Ford zip up document wallet houses the original handbooks and stamped service book as well as both sets of keys with Mountune key fobs. This really is a collectable piece of Ford Fiesta history.

Driver focused with everything you need and not a lot you don’t!

ENGINE & TRANSMISSION
It may have the allure, but it really is the performance that is most impressive about the Peugeot 306 Rallye. The Gruff metallic exhaust howl from the XU 2.0 litre engine develops 167bhp, enough to sprint from 0-62mph in 8.7 seconds and on to a top speed of 137mph. Factory standard in every respect other than a full expensive stainless exhaust with a lifetime guarantee to replicate the original. The engine bay presents well with stickers and fragile labels intact. The VIN stamp to the offside inner wing and Peugeot lion wing stamps confirms factory fitment. The 6-speed transmission is both fun to use and offers great high speed cruising.

WHEELS, TYRES & BRAKES
Cyclone alloy wheels have a few marks but no kerb damage and are shod in sticky Toyo 195/55 R15 tyres with plenty of tread. The braking system features ABS with recently replaced discs all-round to offer straight and strong stopping power.

HISTORY FILE
This limited-edition Peugeot 306 Rallye was produced exclusively for the UK market with only 500 units, 200 of which were in Cherry Red. This example was supplied new by main dealer Struan Peugeot on the 14th May 1999 and has only had four former keepers. The huge and comprehensive service history consists of both the original and a secondary service booklet containing 17 stamped entries from Peugeot main dealers and marque specialists. The most recent service was by a French car specialist in March 2025 and in November 2024 the same company carried out a timing belt and water pump change.
