Rallye Sport Escorts including the Mexico, RS1600 and RS2000 were built at Fords Advanced Vehicle Operations factory in Aveley at a rate of just thirty a day. This AVO Club registered example rolled off the production line in March 1974 and was supplied by Haynes Bros.Ltd of Maidstone, one of 73 specially appointed Rallye Sport Dealers. Registered new to a Dr R Edney incredibly this example has only had four former keepers from new. Dr Edney paid extra to have Cryla-Gard rustproofing and the guarantee certificate is still in the history file! The comprehensive history file confirms two further owners worked at Ford RS Dealers, Invicta Motors Ltd of Faversham and Swale Motor Company of Sittingbourne, so the car wanted for nothing being maintained exclusively by Ford until 1986. At this time it was sold by Mike Young Garage in Ilford Essex to the fourth owner, Mr Picknell, who paid extra for the Ultimate Motorplan breakdown and mechanical Insurance and the car had covered 70,952 miles at this point. Owned by him until 2011 when the final keeper and highly regarded Ford collector, Mr Anthony Manning, took ownership and restored the vehicle to a concours level to which it still presents to this day. Supplied with its original service book and handbook in the Haynes of Maidstone A5 wallet, mases of historic invoices and MOT certificates and AVO Club letters, this really is one of the finest Mk1 Ford Escort RS2000 examples available.

EXTERIOR
Finished in gleaming Astral Black, (Code 202), the paintwork is factory original and presents beautifully thanks to the mere 20,335 miles covered. Mother and Son owned since 2005, this pre-facelift example was only ever used as a dry day weekend car and as such the body and underside condition is superb. All panels complete with factory VIN labels are pin straight and close scrutiny reveals little more than some touched in stone chips and minor marks. The highly sought-after factory hard top complete with electric heated rear window is in good condition with some light storage marks and the original soft top is fully intact. Very rare as they are often lost, is the hardtop kit pouch that holds the colour coded covers to replace the chrome hard top locators and even the ultra-rare leather ‘boxing glove’ covers that fit on the rubber locator posts. The car wears supplying dealer number plates and rear screen sticker to the soft top. A subtle revision to the styling comes in the form of the painted side air intake vents from a post-facelift model, although the original plastic vents are retained if the 100% standard look is desired. Without question one of the best examples with very high specification.

An expensive factory option, the Minnesota Red Leather upholstery, (Code FA30), to the seats and door cards is pristine and compliments the Astral Black paintwork beautifully. The sporty seats are firm with no notable wear and thanks to garage storage from new, the deep red pigment is retained. Carpets remain protected by genuine MR2 velour mats and the headlining to both the soft and hard tops retain full tautness. Light scratches to the plastic b-pillar trims where the seatbelts have recoiled are visible but do not detract from the overall terrific condition. The leather steering wheel and gear knob portray the very low mileage and all equipment functions including the ice-cold air-conditioning. Behind the radio cover is the factory fitted SONY stereo with CD and MiniDisc player connected to the optional CD changer, the envy of many car audio enthusiasts around the early 2nd millennium!

ENGINE & TRANSMISSION
This highly responsive, mid-engined, rear-wheel-drive roadster delivers outstanding performance with its 1.8 litre VVT-i, (Variable Valve Timing with intelligence), technology. Producing 136 bhp at 6,400 rpm in a car weighing less than a ton (after you have left the hardtop in the garage) is a formidable package with performance figures quoted at 129 mph top speed and 0-62 mph in 8.0 secs. Lifting the rear engine cover reveals a very clean engine bay with all plates and stickers intact. The power can be fully exploited with a five-speed close ratio manual transmission offering slick and rapid gear changes.

WHEELS, TYRES & BRAKES
Light weight 5-spoke alloy wheels with locking wheel nuts have no kerb damage and only very light age-related markings. Brand new premium Uniroyal RainSport 5 tyres of correct size 185/55 R15 front and 205/50 R15 rear were fitted in July 2025. The urge to exploit the exciting performance is inevitable and so ABS braking and ventilated front and rear discs ensure controlled, stable braking.

In August 2005, the car was sold once again by the supplying dealership and has remained family owned by Mother and Son since with used vehicle order form and sales invoice in the history file. There is a separate neatly organised folder of Toyota service invoices and all MOT records to fully verify the mileage and catalogue all work diligently carried out. There is also even an original sales brochure in the file along with a letter from the previous owner (Son), recalling the long-term family ownership. Altogether a very well-maintained and garaged example with just one owner from new. The car looks and performs brilliantly, wants for nothing and is ready for immediate use.

ENGINE & TRANSMISSION
The renown 1.3 litre A-plus engine needs little introduction and is legendary for its driveability and excellent economy, this low mileage example being no exception. The 68bhp feels spirited, is quiet and offers very low maintenance costs, even more so with the certified switchable LPG fuel system allowing you to alternate between LPG and conventional petrol and cut running costs further! The system was professionally fitted complete with invoice and certificate and operates perfectly. The engine bay is very clean with original inner and outer wings, and factory labels, stickers, and body plates. The five-speed gear box, again enjoyed only by the privileged MG and Vanden Plas drivers, has been specified to this 1.3L to offer high speed cruising refinement.

WHEELS, TYRES & BRAKES
Oblong slotted pressed steel rims wearing the correct centre hub caps are pristine and matching brand 155/70 R13 tyres show plenty of tread. In lieu of the spare wheel is the LPG tank, neatly installed so as not to impede on the luggage space. The diagonally split dual-circuit hydraulic brakes with servo assistance offer ample stopping power having been overhauled in July 2025.

HISTORY FILE
A fascinating example with a fascinating history. Registered new on the 6th June 1984, the supplying British Leyland Main Dealer was Henlys in Northampton. The first owner, Mr Hinde, who cherished the car for 22 years until 2006. Proud of his purchase, Mr Hinde even kept a copy of a newspaper from five days after with the ‘Miracle Maestro’ advert, but shortly after buying his beloved Maestro, Mr Hinde developed Glaucoma meaning he could not drive. The car was garaged in the hope he could resume driving, however his condition never improved enough to permanently resume motoring. In 2006, Mr Hinde sought to find an enthusiast new owner and so advertised the car through the Austin Maestro & Montego Owners Club. The second owner was found, Mr Grindon, who was a former Austin Rover technician. He wanted to create the ultimate blend of what he saw as the perfect specification when he was a young man working on the Maestros, indeed having even served his apprenticeship on them. Using genuine Maestro parts and accessories, he added the upgraded equipment and ensured this was fastidiously done to the standard as if it were factory fitted. He further had fitted an LPG kit and improved air intake set up as well as a brand new 5 speed gearbox which later Maestros had. Early Maestro dashboards suffered from creaking but not this one, as he even did the dealer style modification to stop this! The car was finally treated to light rustproofing and not content with this car, he built an identical specification car in red for his Brother! There has been just one further keeper, Mr Hann, who works at The Great British Car Journey Museum in Derbyshire. Having seen the car locally for many years, Mr Hann snapped up the opportunity to buy it in 2015 whereby it has attended shows and carried out daily commuting duties in summer months, even being on display during the day at the museum!

The large history file is neatly presented with invoices for servicing and maintenance as well as comprehensive MOT records. The original owner’s information wallet houses the full book pack including service book. A ‘Miracle Maestro’ sales brochure and further range and accessories brochures are included. A full service was carried out in July 2025. In prized care with British Leyland Austin Rover enthusiasts from new, this example is a rare, early and unique part of Maestro history.

Garelli Junior Tiger Cross

SORRY NOW SOLD – SIMILAR WANTED

An iconic UK Garelli Junior Tiger Cross MkII in fabulous condition.

MODEL HISTORY

The MkII was introduced in 1975 and prominent differences from the MkI included thinner tank side decals, black engine casings, ‘fantail’ engine cooling fins, thinner grips to replace the melon type, slightly altered seat and rear shock absorbers. Pogo front forks from the later MkI’s were carried over to the MkII. Of all the bike manufacturers that formed 1970’s Sports Moped phenomenon, the Garelli’s were up on the podium alongside the Yamaha ‘Fizzy’ FS1-E’s as the archetypal Sixteener specials.

The Garelli two-stroke 49cc air cooled engine is quoted producing 6.5bhp and capable of speeds on the flat of 60mph making it one of the most powerful and fastest sports mopeds of its time. All components are fully detailed and the Dell’Orto carburettor with cold start plunger remains fitted. The ‘fantail’ engine cooling fins denote a MkII with the engine number clearly visible and the Silenziatori Lafranconi Frankfurter exhaust remains fitted with the logo crystal clear and a mirror chrome finish. The bike employs a four-speed foot change transmission by chain drive.

WHEELS, TYRES & BRAKES
Factory spoked wheels display a mirror chrome finish as do the wheel hubs. 2.50-19 front and 2.75 -17 rear knobbly tyres are fitted. Drum brakes front and rear require a firm squeeze and stamp to provide adequate braking!
