The final production cars utilised the 1275cc unit mated to Multi-Point fuel Injection to lower emissions and noise and increase performance, a revision that is truly evident in this example.  Factory standard both mechanically and aesthetically, even down to the original exhaust, the engine bay displays factory plates, stickers, MG Rover service parts and even the usually discarded yellow coolant advice disc!   The standard four speed gearbox is smooth, precise and a pleasure to use.

WHEELS, TYRES & BRAKES
The original 13in sports style alloy wheels which were standard on the Cooper Sport 500 are unrestored and essentially as new.  The factory fitted Dunlop SP Sport 3000 175/50/R13 tyres are free from cracking and retain excellent tread.   The unused spare wheel and Pirelli Cinturato CN54 tyre with factory chalk marks rest alongside the original jack and Mini pouch in the immaculate boot area which still displays factory date stickers! The servo assisted brakes incorporating front discs and rear drums bring this lively little car to an assured halt.

HISTORY FILE
The build date of this example is recorded on the Cooper Sport 500 Register as the 18th September 2000 with first registration on 24th January 2001.  The supplying Rover Main Dealer was Epsom Motor Group Limited with the first lucky owner being a Mr Peter Lloyd.  The emphasis is placed on ‘lucky’ as such was the hype and fanfare around the final 500 cars, demand far outstripped supply!  The original order form and subsequent sales invoice made out to Mr Lloyd confirms the price paid of £10,500, with an interesting discrepancy between him originally ordering a British Racing Green car but changing his mind to Solar Red.  Collectors and enthusiasts alike will be pleased to see documentation such as the Mini Assembly Classic Final Audit Sheet, welcome letters to Mr Lloyd from Rover and even a memo sent out to all dealers advising that allocation of cars will not be automatic but instead based on secured customer orders, due to demand.

The history box file contains previous MOT’s certificates and invoices as well as the full book pack including service book.  Importantly, a valuation certificate from David Hollis at the British Mini Club dated September 2017 verifies the cars authenticity and places an insurance value of £25,000.  The previous owner, Mr Roger Coe, who has several low mileage Minis including vans and pick-ups is a serious Mini collector.  Further enhancing the huge appeal of this example is the entirely complete gift box which even still has the individual corrugated card Mini gift boxes and wrapping tissue all contained within the cardboard box sent to the Dealer.  A very rare find as most have been discarded or were reputedly held back by some Rover Dealers!  Finally, the ‘Certifiable Fun’ certificate signed by John Cooper and Kevin Howe and presented with each car remains in the file.  Look no further for the ultimate tribute to Sir Alec Issigonis’ ingenious and hugely influential design.

INTERIOR
A pristine, unaltered and period interior is sure to delight and amaze fans of Austin Rover cars.  The original Zenith Cloth trim in Flint, (Code LCG), remains unworn with absolutely no damage whatsoever.  The matching colour keyed door cards and headlining are superb, and the cut pile carpets are beautifully preserved having been protected by two sets of mats.  All functions and controls operate perfectly and the dashboard and associated switchgear are as new.  The fastidious owner even tailor made a cover for the dashboard and sheaths to place over the door lock buttons to protect them from the sun!  The factory fitted Phillips R570 radio cassette remains fitted and operational.  With a reputation for fragility, the exceptional interior of this cosseted Montego is a credit to its devoted owner.

ENGINE & TRANSMISSION
This Montego LX features the standard 1598cc OHC four cylinder engine with electronic carburettor control developing 86bhp at 5600rpm.  With a top speed of 103mph and 0-60 covered in 11.2 seconds, this car feels lively and surprisingly refined.  The engine bay is beautifully clean, unaltered and displays factory panel stampings, plates and even fragile stickers.  The five speed transmission is light, smooth and effortless.

WHEELS, TYRES & BRAKES
The standard 14in wheels wear the original and correct 1.6LX specification hubcaps in perfect order, un-badged as specified by Rover.  The 185/65 R14 tyres have good tread remaining and the original Goodyear tyre remains fitted and unused to the spare wheel.  The Austin Rover polystyrene circular insert holds the jack, wheel brace and hub cap puller.  Diagonally split dual circuit brakes with servo assistance and front discs bring the car up straight and steady.

HISTORY FILE
Registered new by the Rover Group MCP Department as a company vehicle on the 20th June 1991, the first and only private keeper purchased the car when it was just ten months old on the 23rd April 1992.  Rover Main Dealer, Henlys of Northampton, supplied the vehicle to Miss Zoe Waterfield after she specified particularly that she wanted a Flame Red Montego with electric windows, sunroof and central locking!  The used vehicle invoice in the colossal history file illustrates the price paid of £6,500 and is accompanied by the Henlys pre-sale checklist and welcome letter.  To say that Miss Waterfield is renowned and respected within the Austin-Rover community is a huge understatement, and her dedication to her beloved brand knows no limits with countless visits to Longbridge and even actively protesting the BMW takeover of Rover in January 1994.  Her fanatical following even earned her rare and confidential items such as Top Secret ‘Introducing the Austin’ and Pocket Guides held by Austin Rover Sales staff only, all retained in the Henlys wallet alongside the original stamped service booklet, handbooks and dealership literature.

Despite the low mileage of just 48,365 and the car being stored throughout each winter, the beautifully presented and chronological history folder is simply huge.  Virtually every MOT certificate, invoice, receipt and even a journey log have been kept.  Furthermore, there are articles, club membership literature, photographs and awards as well as three sets of keys including the grey master.  An unmissable opportunity to acquire one of the best, unmolested and original Montego’s in existence.

WHEELS, TYRES & BRAKES
The original 13” alloy wheels are in amazing order having never been refurbished and are shod in brand new branded 185/55 R13 tyres.  Incredibly, the factory fitted Dunlop SP D8 tyres have been retained for originality.  The spare fifth alloy wheel is also fitted with the original Dunlop tyre, and both the wheel and tyre have never seen the road.  To delight the collector even more, alongside the spare wheel is the toolkit, wheel brace and centre cap lever sat in the polystyrene holder, and the original jack is retained by the correct small white bungee strap.  The dual circuit servo assisted brakes with front discs bring the car up to a steady, straight and assured halt.

HISTORY FILE
This astounding example was registered new on 1st June 1990 by Rover Main Dealer, Mann Egerton & Co of Bishop’s Stortford, and has covered a mere 63,591 miles with just two keepers from new.  The previous keeper purchased the car from Rover Main Dealer, Warners of Windlesham, when the car was less than two years old and had covered just 8,823 miles.  A used vehicle sales invoice in the history file confirms a purchase price of £7,360.  The devotion by the second and long term owner is truly remarkable with the care and attention lavished upon her pride and joy second to none.  She even had the foresight to periodically buy spare carpet mats, trim pieces and parts while they could still be found, just in case they were ever needed!

The colossal history file is simply incredible with all handbooks, radio guides, service book other point of sale literature neatly kept inside the plastic A5 wallet.  Furthermore, a huge folder of receipts and invoices span from new to present, and there are two documented cambelt changes with the most recent being done less than 4,000 miles ago.  A detailed maintenance log, original Rover range sales brochure and two sets keys complete the history file.  This Metro is an absolute credit to the former keeper and represents an unrepeatable opportunity to acquire arguably the best example of this very rare surviving model.
