Austin Rover Ledbury Maestro

SORRY NOW SOLD – SIMILAR WANTED

An astonishing Austin Rover Ledbury Maestro with only 4,701 miles.

MODEL HISTORY
The Rover Ledbury Maestro, a fascinating car with a story to tell. Originally destined for assembly operations at the new Rover Groups Project Enterprise plant in Bulgaria, only 2,200 units in KD, (Knock Down), kits were produced ready to be exported. The plant was expected to produce 10,000 cars annually when built in 1994. The projects rapid demise due to advanced competition from other car makers and broken contractual agreements meant that 621 ‘cancelled export order’ Maestros mainly hatchbacks but some vans, left-hand drive and crated up in complete kit form were snapped up by the multi-millionaire boss and ex Formula One team owner, Paul Stoddart. His warehouse at a garage he owned in Herefordshire that he could convert to build the cars was called Parkway Services, it was in Ledbury, hence the name Ledbury Maestro. The conversion from left to right hand drive which involved a new dashboard, steering components, wipers and headlights. The first cars have R-reg plates but they’re available on anything up to a 51 plate and at the time they were sold for £4,995 making it Britain’s cheapest car. Source: Rover, Bulgaria, and an F1 team owner: The curious story of the Ledbury Maestro by James Foxall and Ledbury Maestro – Rodacar’s Bulgarian Austin by Keith Adams.

HISTORY FILE
A copy of the Austin Rover vehicle register in the history file confirms a build date of 13th November 1989 for what was to be possibly the luckiest and most pampered Metro there ever was to be! The car was registered new on 21st November 1989 by Rover Main Dealer, Lex Mead Stockport, to first owner, Mrs McHale. Cherished, strictly garaged and maintained regardless of cost, the car had covered just 19,000 miles when in 2009 Mrs McHale sadly passed away. Later that year, Tom Morley who is a prominent Metro Owner’s Club member and collector of British Leyland and Austin Rover cars, took up the opportunity to purchase the car. Then began what was to be a journey of many years of dedication to the car and countless winning podium positions at national shows and concours judging events. There are too many winning accolades, Best in Show awards and Pride of Ownership achievements to list, with a full set of awards in the history file. A huge achievement was when the Metro qualified and was showcased on the prestigious Meguiar’s Stand at the NEC Classic Car Show in November 2019 to feature on the Best in Show stand. Please click here to see a video of Tom being interviewed by Mike Brewer at the show.

The immaculate presented and categorised history file is every inch as meticulous as the car itself and features a huge record of the cars show history and awards along with several albums of photos including those cataloguing the detailing process. A second section holds a massive file of invoices and MOT certificates dating back to 1996 to accompany the full book pack including the service book in the Lex Mead wallet. The Meguiar’s and Autoglym show boards remain with the car ready for the next owners show attendance! With Metro’s fast becoming increasingly collectable having celebrated the 40th Anniversary in 2020, this pampered example is without question one of the best in existence and proven so!

A reminder maintenance tag to return to the dealer in 1200 miles is still attached to the gear stick and the Alloy Accessory Pack remains a desirable dealer fitted accessory. The boot area is spotlessly unused as is the virgin spare and original jack in the Mini pouch.

ENGINE & TRANSMISSION
The time proven Rover Group A-Series engine utilises the 1275cc unit mated to twin-point fuel Injection to lower emissions and increase performance to a refined yet punchy 62bhp. The delightful and unobtrusive rasp from the factory standard exhaust is a familiar note. The engine bay is spotless and factory standard to allow exhibiting. The vehicle still has all the fluids, filters and service items as it rolled off the production line at Longbridge. At the request of the next custodian these items can be replaced at no cost but equally it is understood if preservation is preferred. The four speed gearbox is smooth, precise and a pleasure to use.

WHEELS, TYRES & BRAKES
Cooper Sport 13in alloy wheels with the correct green Mini centre logo caps remain in fantastic order and are still shod in matching Dunlop SP Sport 3000 175/50 R13 tyres from new. Although new in appearance and original fitment is desired by collectors, due to age, a change is recommended if use is intended. The servo assisted brakes incorporating front discs and rear drums bring the car to a prompt and assured halt and the car rolls freely.

HISTORY FILE
An astonishing history. Purchased new by Mini fanatic, Patrick James Callinan, (his personalised plate remains on the vehicle from new C8 PJC), this example was registered on the 3rd May 2000. Wanting one of the final classic Mini’s before production ceased he ordered the car directly from Rover MG Main Dealer, Houtkamp B.V. in Amsterdam. At the time they offered UK buyers a saving on factory ordered RHD UK specification cars and even paid for travel and accommodation! Safe in the knowledge this car is identical to the one supplied by his local dealer and the prospect of a fun European drive home, he placed the order. Unfortunately soon after his return he passed suddenly. His partner, Teresa Doree, relays the story in writing to be included in the cars history file, that she could not bear the thought of selling the car with so many adventures planned together and it remained in her cherished care until 2016. At this time the car was sold to a car collector Mr West who continued the preservation and factory immaculate storage. A full complement of keys, tags and remotes are included. On a successful sale KGF Classic Cars will discuss options regarding servicing and MOT carried out at the buyers discretion and at no cost.

HISTORY FILE
This wonderful example was registered new on 20th November 1996 by Rover Main Dealer, J.C Bates & Sons Ltd of Brighouse, and has covered just 9,876 miles from new! The new vehicle sales invoice in the history file is made out to first owner, Miss Delia Brealey, who paid £8,800 for the car having specified Pearlescent paintwork as a £229.79 factory option. Miss Brealey kept the vehicle in very sparing use until her passing in 2013. The car has had just two further traceable Rover enthusiast keepers, the previous who recently purchased the car for £4,300 and who also owns a 1984 Mini Metro. Despite owning this car for a short period of time and having searched for a good example for many years, the difficult decision to part with the car is necessitated as he has finally been offered a Wolseley 1500 that he has been trying to acquire for even longer!

The history file consists of the original full Rover book pack including the service booklet containing 14 stamped entries, all of which are the original selling Rover Main Dealer, J.C Bates & Sons Ltd! A cambelt change as well as a service was carried out in September 2020 at 9,876 miles. A separate presentation history folder contains invoices and previous MOT certificates to further fully verify the mileage. Completing the history is two sets of Rover keys with fobs and dealer keyrings and an original Rover 100 Series range brochure. The final incarnation of the Metro story, a hugely significant chapter in British motoring history and represented perfectly with this remarkable example.
