This elegant and very desirable Mercedes-Benz SL is the 300SL-24 model having covered just 27,227 miles from new.  Finished in stunning Arctic White, (Code 147), the paintwork is beautifully presented with a bright pure shine and uniform finish, entirely commensurate with a pampered car of such remarkably low mileage.  All panels are free from damage with only light imperfections visible upon close scrutiny, namely a paint blemish to the front offside wing and a light rub to the nearside corner of the front lower bumper.  The factory Black soft-top, (Code 740), is superb and fully intact with the original Mercedes clear unmarked screens and just two small marks to the outer fabric.  An exemplary example of the model that affirmed the maker’s repute for engineering excellence.

INTERIOR
High quality materials and first-class workmanship can be felt in every feature from the multi-contoured seats finished in optional Black leather, (Code 271), to the seamless operation of the electric roof.  The driver’s seat although fully intact with no rips is showing slight ageing and usage markings to the outer bolster.  The immaculate carpets have been protected from new by Mercedes-Benz floor mats and the inner lining to the hood is perfect.  All controls and functions are fully operational with exception of the outside temperature gauge.  Factory specified with rear child seats and seat belts for small people only, the rear seats fold down to create additional luggage space and there are two small impressions to the leather where the seatbelt buckles touch.  Originality seekers will note the factory fitted Blaupunkt Atlanta SQR47 stereo and service sticker still within the driver’s door shut.  Ergonomically excellent and the ultimate grand tourer.

ENGINE & TRANSMISSION
The six-cylinder 2960cc engine has four valves per cylinder with twin overhead camshafts producing 230bhp and 272Nm of torque.  A top speed of 146mph and 0-60 in 8.4 seconds is quoted in the manufacturer literature, and this impressive low mileage example feels wonderful to drive.  The spotless and unaltered engine bay displays factory build plates and stickers.  The four speed torque-converter automatic transmission operates perfectly and suits leisurely and enthusiastic driving alike with both sport and economy transmission modes.

WHEELS, TYRES & BRAKES
Cast light-alloy wheels in fifteen-hole design are unrestored and show light markings to the outer rims and some delamination.  Matching Pirelli Cinturato P7 225/55 R16 were fitted all round in 2016 and have excellent tread remaining.  The full size spare wheel remains fitted with the factory supplied Dunlop D40 tyre housed neatly in the boot area alongside the Mercedes tool roll, warning triangle, jack and even the delicate and often destroyed wheel changing instruction card!  The standard ABS system with fixed calliper disc brakes front and rear offers reassuring stopping power.

HISTORY FILE
Supplied new on the 17th October 1990 by Mercedes-Benz Main Dealer, H L Gorner Ltd of Wigan, this beautiful and very desirable 300SL-24 has covered mere 27,227 miles from new, fully verified.  The original service booklet contains 7 Mercedes-Benz dealer and specialist stamps, with the most recent entry at 26,625 miles.  The factory build card with options list is in the rear page of the service book and both the factory consignment card and dealer PDI checklist have also been kept.  Furthermore, the history file contains service invoices, virtually every MOT certificate dating back to 1994 and incredibly every single tax disc from new to the discontinuation of the paper disc, all laminated for preservation!  Completing the history file is the dealer supplied leather wallet and book packs, two original remote keys and even the supplying dealer tax disc holder.  An original sales brochure and specification pamphlet is also included.  This highly sought after 300SL 24 Valve model is firmly a modern classic and fast becoming highly collectable, particularly as a low mileage preserved example offered here.

The Mercedes SL R230 Series was designed using the ground-breaking supercomputer in the “CAVE” (Computer Aided Virtual Environment) which allowed designers to meticulously analyse every curve and line. After introduction of the V8 SL55 AMG, Mercedes surprised the industry and press by developing this, the awesome V12 bi-turbo SL65 AMG a year later. This well appointed two seat roadster features factory optional leather upholstery in Anthracite, (Code 221), which is spotlessly clean and free from wear with firm bolsters.  The fastidious owner routinely fed the leather ensuring it has remained supple and only tiny hairline creases can be seen on the outer driver’s seat bolsters.  Tailored SLK floor mats have preserved the carpets and the headlining to the Vario roof is as new.  All trim sections are immaculate other than some minor lifting to the drivers sill kick plate and the controls and functions operate seamlessly including the Speedtronic cruise control/limiter and ice-cold air conditioning.  Factory stickers remain in the spotless door shuts and inner boot lid, and the luggage area holds the space saver spare wheel, compressor, first aid kit, warning triangle, tool roll and jack, all present and in their place!  Even factory codes remain stamped on the boot floor of this superbly original example.

ENGINE & TRANSMISSION

Supplied new on the 13th August 1993 by Mercedes-Benz Main Dealer, J.R.Tagger Ltd of Watford, this UK example has had just one private keeper from new.  Purchased from J.R.Tagger Ltd as the Sales Managers demonstrator at just 7 months old, the sales invoice in the history file is made out to Mr Bernard Kaye and illustrates the price paid of £34,750.  Incredibly, Mr Kaye has kept this beautiful 320E for 24 years and covered a fully verified 71,053 miles.  The service history is simply remarkable and colossal, with the original service booklet containing 32 stamped entries, the most recent being in July 2017 at 70,719 miles.  To accompany each stamp is a huge history folder containing every corresponding service invoice and previous MOT certificates to leave in no doubt the fastidious annual maintenance.  The Mercedes document wallet contains all handbooks, guides and point of sale literature as well as two original Mercedes keys with J.R.Tagger leather fobs.  Two period road test reports are also included.

Supplied new on the 8th January 1991 by Mercedes-Benz Main Dealer, Rawsons T.M.S Ltd of Kent, this UK example has covered just 64,801 miles from new with only two former keepers.  The first custodian, Mrs Valerie Botting for 20 years, transferred ownership to her son Haydon Botting in 2011.  He enjoyed the car for a further five years for pleasure and weekend use only before selling the car to a dedicated Mercedes enthusiast.  The car has remained in the ownership of appreciative individuals who have preserved the car in totally standard form and upheld the required servicing.  There are 19 stamped entries along with supporting invoices in the original service booklet, which even still has the factory build codes in the rear cover.  All other handbooks, guides and dealership literature remain in the plastic document wallet.  Completing the history file is an original sales brochure and two sets of Mercedes keys.

HISTORY FILE
First registered on 6th June 2001 by Mercedes-Benz Dartford, this outstanding example has covered an incredibly low 15,652 miles from new with just one owner.  A new vehicle order form and subsequent sales invoice is made out to a Mr Chapman who purchased the car for his wife, Rita Chapman, as a retirement present.  The sales invoice confirms the price paid of £33,300 including expensive factory options for leather upholstery and metallic paint.  Used exclusively for weekend enjoyment, the car was kept strictly garaged and has been preserved accordingly.  The black leather A5 wallet holds the original service booklet with factory build card and option codes along with all handbooks, radio guides and dealer literature and even the Mercedes pen!  The service entries and previous MOT certificates fully verify the low mileage and a collection of Mercedes and marque specialist invoices are neatly filed in the history folder.  The most recent major service was carried out at independent MB specialists, NJS Solutions, with an invoice in the history file for £824.76.  Completing the history file is two sets of original remote keys.

The R107 Mercedes-Benz SL achieved iconic status in the 1970’s and 80’s and became a byword for success, a car for those who had made it! Now a stalwart feature of the modern classic car era, this 280SL represents a superb example having covered just 57,069 miles from new. Finished in factory optional Champagne Metallic, (Code 473), the paintwork boasts a magnificent finish and uniform shine. This fabulously period colour accentuates the cars classic elegant lines, and even upon close scrutiny only tiny markings can be found. The original Dark Brown hood, (Code 8023), is as new, as are the side and rear hood windows. The original colour coded hard top remains with the car and is in immaculate condition, and the hood aperture is clean and displays the original foam bump stops. The high-quality chrome has a mirror finish and trim sections and rubbers are superb. A car that excelled in engineering, build quality and craftsmanship when new, this example has been preserved exactly as Mercedes intended.

INTERIOR
The interior of this 280SL, upholstered in matching Cream Beige fabric with leather side trim, (Code 075), has remained in fantastic condition. The seats are beautifully preserved and commensurate with the low mileage and all seat structure is fully intact with no loss of shape. One miniscule mark to the driver’s seat base can be seen and there is a virtually invisible nick to the leather upper bolster. The deep pile carpets are pristine having been protected from new by Mercedes over mats. The fascia is perfect and all the gauges, controls and electrics operate exactly as they should, including the optional Philips 750 radio cassette. The rear luggage area has the original first aid kit in the side holder and the boot area has the factory supplied toolkit as well as the original warning triangle. Originality seekers will note the rear light clusters complete with delicate manufacturer stickers still attached. Hugely advanced ergonomically and from an era when Mercedes-Benz set the standard for all makers to emulate.

ENGINE & TRANSMISSION
The six-cylinder in-line engine fitted to the 280SL model offered a power output quoted in the manufacturer literature of 185hp and 240Nm of torque, enough to propel this driving machine to a maximum speed of 121mph whilst 0-60 is achieved in 10.01 seconds. The engine bay is spotless and retains all manufacturer stickers, plates and panel stampings. The low mileage credentials are evident in the perfect under-bonnet insulation panel which is usually deteriorated. The four-speed automatic transmission is flawless in operation with positive kickdown.

The original 12-hole colour coded hubcaps with chromium plated rims are unrestored and in excellent order with only light hairline scratches to the outer edges. Quality matching Michelin Energy 195/70 R14 tyres have masses of tread and the unused spare wheel remains shod in the factory Continental Supercontact tyre which still displays the coloured banding! This 280SL was first registered on 9th August 1985 by Mercedes-Benz Main Dealer, Jim Russell of Norfolk. Having covered just 57,069 miles from new with only three former keepers, this example is highly desirable and suitable for the avid collector. The Mercedes plastic wallet houses all handbooks, guides and dealership literature as well as both genuine Mercedes roof levers neatly stored in the pouch holder. The original service and maintenance booklet displays the factory build card attached to the rear sleeve along with 10 stamped entries, all of which are Mercedes Main Dealer, with eight being the original supplying dealer, Jim Russell. The spacious interior is tastefully upholstered in full black leather (code 031) with matching colour scheme carpets. The seats are in pristine order with no discolouration or cracking and the deep pile carpeting throughout has been protected by original fit Mercedes-Benz over-mats. The wood veneer is preserved and the fascia is perfect. All the gauges, controls and electrics operate exactly as they should, as does the factory optional Blaupunkt Cambridge M23 stereo cassette. The original jack, first aid kit and even the dealer supplied Mercedes valet kit and wheel changing guide are stored alongside the spare wheel! The boot area has factory build stickers present. Registered new on the 26th May 1982 by Mercedes Main Dealers Bradshaw Webb (Chelsea) Ltd, this amazing example has covered a mere 18,971 miles with just three traceable keepers. The history file is simply incredible starting with the original Mercedes plastic wallet housing the service book, handbook and absolutely all dealership literature including the factory build card. Furthermore, a huge collection of main dealer and specialist invoices and receipts portray this cars cosseted existence and every MOT certificate from three years old serves to verify the mileage.

A tiny five pence piece sized area of the driver’s bolster has rubbed slightly thin in comparison to the otherwise flawless upholstery. All carpeting has been protected with Mercedes-Benz over mats from new and the headlining is tight and spotless. The boot area is perfect with the tool roll, spare wheel and warning triangle correctly stored, in addition to the boot floor carpet which has factory tags still intact!
