Ford Focus 1.4i Zetec

SORRY NOW SOLD – SIMILAR WANTED

A scarce Mk1 Ford Focus 1.4i Zetec with one owner and a mere 2,241 miles.

EQUIPMENT
Bumpers in body colour, door mirrors in body colour, tinted glass, sports suspension, front fog lights, dual note horn, Safeguard immobiliser, driver and front passenger airbags, steel safety cage, side impact beams, sports style front seats, headrests to all five seats, medium grey metallic gear knob, metallic door trim inserts and centre stack bezel, leather trimmed steering wheel, interior power release for tailgate, remote central double locking, electric front windows, Ford 4000RDS stereo cassette system. Factory Options: Moondust Silver metallic paint. Dealer Accessories: Ford tailored carpet mats.

EXTERIOR
An instant success upon launch in 1998 and following on from the Ka, Puma, Cougar and revised 1996 Mondeo, the Focus Mk1 used Ford’s New Edge design language and was a massive deviation from the outgoing conservatively styled Escort. Finished in factory optional Ford Moondust Silver metallic, (Code O 8), this pre-facelift Mk1 example boasts unrepeatable credentials of one owner and 2,241 miles from new. Garaged from new, it is hard to conceive the phenomenal condition whereby even close scrutiny fails to detect any imperfections. All trim sections, rubbers, light clusters and badges are perfect having been stored away from harsh weather and sunlight damage. Supplying Ford main dealer number plates and rear screen sticker remain attached. The level of preservation seen here is simply astonishing, even down to the exceptional underside which has been meticulously cleaned and detailed to a show worthy level. This really is a prime collector’s example now becoming extinct.

INTERIOR
Truly worthy of the accolade, time warp. The Swift upholstery in Midnight Black, (Code AC), is as new with no visible wear, entirely as you would expect for mileage covered normally within weeks of new registration. All interior trim is flawless and the headlining is perfect. Tailored Ford floor mats protect the pristine carpets. All controls and functions are fully operational including the Ford 4000RDS stereo cassette system. The leather trimmed steering wheel, gear knob and soft finish fascia are in showroom condition with no visible wear to the touch points. A small split to the drivers door rubber is barely noticeable. The luggage area remains spotlessly clean with unused space saver spare wheel. Look no further for an ‘as new’ Ford Focus Mk1 interior.

ENGINE & TRANSMISSION
The economical 1.4i 16v engine develops 74bhp and 123Nm of torque allowing a top speed of 106mph and 0-62mph in 14.4 seconds. The engine bay is impeccable throughout with all factory labels, stickers and the Vin plate perfect. Items such a plastic fluid bottes, clips and pipes, usually stained and marked within the first few months, look like new. With genuine Ford Motorcraft service items used throughout, including a major service and cambelt in September 2025, this Focus performs like a brand new car in every regard. The five-speed gearbox is precise and beautifully weighted. This epitomises the brand new Focus Mk1 driving experience that caused such a stir and motoring press acclaim in 1998!

WHEELS, TYRES & BRAKES
The unrestored Zetec specification 15in five double-spoke alloy wheels are immaculate as are the centre caps. Premium Uniroyal 195/55 R15 tyres have been fitted all round in September 2025. The braking system has also been overhauled in September 2025.

HISTORY FILE
Supplied new on 1st March 2001 by Main Dealer, Allen Ford in Romford, the first and only registered owner is a Mr Young. In stark contrast to most examples that were put into daily use in all weathers, this example was destined for a more cossetted existence. The car has always been garaged, clearly evident in the condition of both the body and astonishing underside, and it is believed that due to the owner’s ill health the car was subject to very minimal use. Early service records as well as online MOT history track the mileage. The original service book has six stamped entries, the first five of which are the supplying dealership, Allen Ford, and cover the period up to 2007 when the car was taken off the road. In August 2025, the car caught the attention of KGF Classic Cars by a feature from a prominent online content creator covering a Mk1 Ford Focus with miniscule mileage and one owner coming up for sale. Intrigue got the better of us and we found ourselves at a classic car auction where we inpected the the car prior to bidding. Being absolutely blown away by the condition and originality, we decided to deviate from our general rule of buying classic cars direct from owner, enthusiasts and collectors and just had to bid. Having won the auction, the car arrived at KGF Classic Cars headquarters where ramp inspection left the team even more speechless at the exceptional preserved condition. Not wanting the car to just be an ornament, a full inspection, brake overhaul, major service and cambelt change has taken place using genuine Ford parts. The original factory fitted Michelin tyres were replaced due cracking with premium Uniroyal tyres. A set of brand-new floor mats ordered directly from Ford are a nice finishing touch replacing the non-original rubber items. The car is now fully roadworthy and ready to showcase what is probably the finest non-RS Mk1 you are ever likely to see. The modern classic car world has long seen the Mk1 Focus RS as highly collectable, and now the car community and indeed many online creators are beginning to revel in the collectability of the everyday variant. Quickly disappearing, the Mk1 Focus has always been an icon and forward-thinking collectors and investors will be making a beeline for this car!

The Ford document wallet holds all handbooks, guides, service book and both sets of keys with two Allen Ford fobs. A folder of MOT records, service invoices and an original sales brochure and price list complete the history file. This one is very special and fast becoming iconic.

A full album of photos shows the completeness and originality of the car prior to restoration work and the meticulous steps taking during the refurbishment to create the show car seen today. Various small imperfections can be seen which include a small ding on the bonnet and paint blemishes. The vehicle has always been garaged and boot spoiler has been colour coded. The underside is incredibly clean and original and free from underbody seal with no weld repairs. Still fitted with the supplying Ford Dealer number plates this retro hot hatch remains true to the 1980’s manufacturer design!

INTERIOR
Having covered such low mileage, the Daytona patterned seat fabric, (Code SF), is unworn and the snug sculptured structure remains. Ford aficionados will marvel in the factory fresh ambience of this interior which still retains a characteristic and distinctive Ford aroma! The colour-keyed cut pile carpet is unmarked and the unique Cool Black XR3i headlining is clean and tight with no tears. The moulded door trim panels including the soft-feel armrests and stowage bins are in excellent order but the material on the armrest has lifted slightly. The door pulls prone to usage related markings are almost wear free. The small two spoke sports steering wheel is commensurate with the low miles covered with all manufacturer veins still prominent. All interior gauges operate correctly along with the original Ford ESRT 32PS radio/cassette with ‘joystick’ speaker balance control. Often misused, the phrase ‘time warp’ feels truly appropriate.

ENGINE & TRANSMISSION
Standard in every respect and a purists dream, this 1.6 litre engine with Bosch K-Jetronic fuel injection. The engine bay is spotlessly clean with manufacturer stickers and plates visible along with clear stampings to the inner wings. A crisp, responsive 104bhp offers hugely entertaining driving manners and swift performance. A top speed of 115mph and 0-60mph in 9.6 seconds feels spirited thanks to a kerb weight of just 945kg. The 5-speed transmission is light, precise and a joy to use.

WHEELS, TYRES & BRAKES
The optional alloy wheels with Ford emblem are unmarked and shod is Firestone 185/60 R14 tyres all with excellent tread remaining and the spare wheel retains the original Dunlop Sport D3. The diagonally-split dual-line servo assisted brakes with front discs and self-adjusting rear drums stop the car quickly and safely.

HISTORY FILE
Supplied new by Ford Main Dealers, Crystal Ford of Hull Ltd on the 12th August 1986, this example had two keepers within its first year of life. The third keeper, Mr John Hallam a retired Professor, purchased the car in October 1987 and remained the owner until 2015. Mr Hallam enjoyed the car as his pride and joy for five years before stopping driving for health reasons. Garage stored for 23 years until KGF Classic Cars discovered it nearly a decade ago and were delighted to offer it to market whereby it was promptly snapped up. Honoured to have been offered it again the car has recently had a major service and cambelt change in November 2024. Subsequently sold again in late 2024 to a long-standing collector client who has now acquired from us a Ford Fiesta RS Turbo and reluctant sale of this XR3i necessitated by a strict one in one out policy.

The original service booklet contains annual stamped entries for the cars early years prior to storage as well as the most recent entries commencing in 2015 with the last in 2024. A Crystal dealer sticker was applied to the front cover of the service book and remains attached. The vehicle handbook and radio guide also form part of the history file all contained withing the blue A5 Ford wallet. Two original keys to operate all locks and a sales brochure are included.

Scrutinising the car it is unbelievable that the documented and photographed restoration was carried out over 34 years ago, such is the stunning condition today. With a tiny split to the rear window rubber and some touched-in marks, this is no freshly restored and unproven machine covering 14,000 miles since complete. The black looped-pile carpet and black headlining are unmarked and the door cards are not warped. All instrumentation within the dished six-dial dash is operational along with switchgear. Benefiting from a RS2000-type full height console housing a period and working Radiomobile and inoperative Kinzie clock, this is no poverty base spec or stripped out race car! The engine presents fabulously with the chassis number on the strut top and even the delicate cardboard lower engine cover in situ. A rebuilt and strengthened 4-speed gearbox with a complete upgraded clutch assembly drives the rear wheels through a 3.54 crown wheel and pinion from the RS2000 to allow better cruising speeds.

WHEELS, TYRES, & BRAKES
Spoke-style sculptured steel wheels measuring 5.5×13 inch with genuine RS centre caps are immaculate and finished in the correct two-tone with metallic Pearl Grey centres. Sticky Yokohama 185/60 R13 tyres have ample tread. Ventilated front discs are gripped by uprated calipers and Mexico rear drums which have RS2000 back-plates and shoes, do a fine job of stopping the car. Goodridge brake lines and a relocated Lockheed remote brake servo also help ensure safety under hard braking.

HISTORY FILE
Built at Fords Advanced Vehicle Operations factory in Aveley in October 1973, this vehicle was first registered on the 14th February 1974. A very well-known car within club circles, this genuine article has only had five former keepers from new and the last for 36 years! Michael Lloyd-Jacobs is a perfectionist, a Rolls-Royce and Bentley technician by trade and when he bought this Escort Mexico in August 1989 he intended it for everyday use rather than a concours winner! That is why it features many discreet modifications to the engine, suspension and brakes that do not look out of place, in fact and being a stickler for detail, when complete in the Spring of 1991 the car was able to enter both concours and modified classes – and win! With a huge box of trophies, rosettes and certificates and a list of all the awards from AVO National Days, Ford Fairs, RS National Days and many more, the provenance of this car is unrivalled. Two huge files of neatly presented invoices, AVO Club valuations and a letter from the owner make wonderful reading. Featured many times in HAVOC, the club magazine for AVO members and a magazine feature in Fast Ford dated January 1992, are all valuable documents. The next lucky custodian can expect to be blown away with both the condition and driving experience.

The following year, Mr Goodier returned to the supplying dealer for them to supply and fit a rear spoiler costing £250 as confirmed by the invoice in the history file. Always garaged and used for the first two years, the car was taken off the road due to the first owners ill health where it remained dry stored. In 2007 the car had its first MOT and in 2013 the car was sold to a garage proprietor who underwent full recommissioning. Subsequent owners are fully traceable and listed in the huge history file along with annual mileage records allowing further verification of the amazing credentials.
