Austin Maxi 2 1750L

FOR SALE
An unrestored museum piece Austin Maxi 2 1750L with just 19,420 miles.

EQUIPMENT
All steel unitary construction, Hydragas suspension, lift-up full tailgate, underbody protection, wax injected body sills, twin door mirrors, anti-burst door locks, side rubbing strips, removable trimmed parcel shelf, full-width matt finish burr walnut veneered fascia, face-level fresh air vents, twin sun-visors with driver’s ticket flap and passenger vanity mirror, fully reclining front seats, rear seats foldable to make double bed, front and rear ashtrays, cigar lighter, lockable glovebox, electric washers, two-speed wipers, flick wipe, hazard warning lamps, rear fog guard lamp, courtesy lights, radio, twin wind-tone horns, Austin MW/LW radio.

EXTERIOR
‘Loads better’ as the original sales brochure boasts for the all-new Maxi 2 in 1980 which is certainly the case with this unrestored exceptionally low mileage example! The stunning Champagne Beige, (Code LMK), paintwork is factory original throughout which is almost unheard of for any 45 year old classic, particularly a British Leyland product! The paintwork is simply astonishing with close scrutiny detecting nothing other than a few light markings to the drivers door edge, chips and a thumbnail size area on the front wing where the paint has rubbed slightly upon some overzealous polishing. All panels are factory original, pin straight and in perfect structural condition, as is the underside that has never seen any repairs carried out. The door shuts and flawless seam lines are in superb condition, as are all trim section, glass, lights and badges. Supplied through the famous Patrick Motors Group dealer network, the car still wears their branded number plates and rear screen sticker. An almost inconceivable rare survivor against adverse odds, this is a very special car.

INTERIOR
The long-legged Maxi was designed to offer unrivalled levels of comfort, space, economy and versatility and Austin claimed it was Britain’s ideal family car for business, pleasure, holidays and shopping! The fully reclining front and rear seats are famous for transforming into a double bed with vast luggage space and the seats are upholstered in Marle knitted nylon cloth in Terracotta colour scheme, (Code CAF). In keeping with the mere 19,420 miles covered and cossetted existence, the interior can rightly be described as in time warp condition. Indoor storage from new has seen the upholstery protected against degradation with only minor fade to the carpet and the lack of use sees the cloth in fine condition and seats retaining correct shape. The equally wear free carpets are bright and the PVC door cards are spotless as is the headlining. Traditional British Leyland craftsmanship is evident with the perfect matt walnut veneer fascia and crackle finish plastic as well as the instantly familiar BL switchgear, all well preserved. The steering wheel and gear knob displays the prominent factory veins found only on such low mileage examples. The boot area is clean with some light damage to the side panels caused by a British Leyland typically ill-thought-out design of the parcel shelf removal! Astonishingly well preserved.

ENGINE & TRANSMISSION
Powered by the British Leyland ‘E’ Series 1748cc overhead camshaft engine fitted with a single SU HS6 carburettor producing 72bhp at 4900rpm. The engine bay is mind-blowingly clean with all stickers, plates and stampings clearly visible. Such originality is remarkable even down to clearly defined inner wing spot welds, VIN stamp, Unipart labels original rather than reproduction and even the green Unipart HT leads! The five-speed gearbox is light and precise. Splendid!

WHEELS, TYRES & BRAKES
Full width L specification styled wheel covers unrestored with no cracks and show only age-related aging and marks. Matching premium brand Uniroyal 155/80 R13 tyres show masses of tread. The servo assisted braking system with discs upfront operate well with all maintenance up to date.

HISTORY FILE
The 1980 Maxi 2 was the final incarnation of the model before production ceased in 1981, 12 years after the Alec Issigonis design was first introduced in 1969. This very late example was supplied new by Austin, Morris, MG, Rover and Triumph main dealership, Patrick Motors Group, on the 1st August 1981. The Patrick Motors Group were heavily involved in the motor industry under stewardship of several generations of the Patrick dynasty. A museum called the Patrick Collection in Kings Norton, Birmingham, opened in 1962 and was a major collection covering over 100 years of motoring. This exact Maxi was selected to be on display in the collection owing to the originality, condition, and ultra-low mileage as well as the fact it was known to have been supplied through their very own dealer network! The car passed into a private collection after the museum closed in 2018.

All servicing and maintenance is up to date and there is a neat file of invoices and MOT records as well as an original sales brochure and vehicle handbook. An unrepeatable and rare opportunity to buy surely one of the best examples of British Leyland motoring history.

EXTERIOR
Aprilia designed the Mojito series scooter with strong inspiration from the trendy café cultures of Rome and Turin. Having covered an amazingly low 46 miles from new with one owner, the original finish to the Aprilia Black/Matt Black bodywork is incredible aside from a few miniscule markings to the offside vinyl decal. The trim pieces and ‘Mojito’ decals are fully intact and all clips, nuts and bolts are excellent. Very faint pitting to some chromed sections is barely worth a mention. The footboard, faring, rubbers and switchgear are all as new, as is the seat which lifts to reveal large storage with factory stickers intact. The supplying dealer number plate is still fitted. An effortlessly stylish and beautifully preserved example, perfect for café culture fashionistas!

ENGINE & TRANSMISSION
The 2-stroke single cylinder air cooled engine with Keihin Diffuser Carburettor features CDI ignition and electric start for effortless everyday use. This quiet 50cc unit is incredibly frugal! All mechanical components are spotless clean and the original exhaust remains fitted. The CVT auto transmission with automatic centrifugal clutch works perfectly and allows straightforward fool proof scootering with a guaranteed beaming smile! Very important is that the Mojito Custom range are ecological vehicles with communitarian homologation Euro2, in respect of the acoustic and atmospheric pollution limits, in case you were wondering.

WHEELS, TYRES & BRAKES
The 15-spoke light alloy front wheel and 6-spoke rear wheel look superb and are completely free from damage. The original branded Maxxis tyres of size 120 70-12 front and 130 70-10 rear have masses of tread having covered just 46 miles! The single 190mm front disc and 110mm rear drum braking set up stops the bike quickly and safely.

HISTORY FILE
Registered new on 9th October 2003 by Aprilia Agent MaxiMoto in Bury St. Edmunds, this exceptional Mojito has covered just 46 miles from new! Purchased by a Mr Hales as a gift for his partner, he wanted the bike to offer her more freedom for short journeys in their local area. After a few journeys, a change in circumstances left the scooter being dry stored under covers whereby it became an ‘out of sight out of mind’ affair, and the mileage therefore never rose above the current 46 miles! Offered to KGF Classic Cars by the original owner, the bike has undergone in January 2026 full recommissioning to include: Drained fuel tank, carburettor and fuel tank cleaned, 2-stroke oil drained and renewed, brake fluid changed, replaced spark plug, checked and cleaned brakes. Invoices for recommissioning work are in the history file and there are two sets of keys. Keys for top box and cable lock are all present. The handbook and original service and warranty book are present along with a sales brochure.

Representing an almost as new scooter, this exceptionally low mileage example is far superior to the usual examples and offers cheap and cheerful modern classic riding fun. Perfect for anyone wanting to get into retro scootering!

HISTORY FILE
An endearing history for a very special car! Supplied new by Skoda Main Dealer, Clarion Cars of Worthing, this Estelle Two 130L was destined for a cherished existence! Date of registration was the 26th March 1987 and the first owner was Mrs Wyatt. All purchase documentation including the sales invoice confirms the price paid of £3,579.59 less part exchange allowance of £1600.59 for the family’s 1984 Estelle 120L. The Wyatt family at this point had long-been Skoda enthusiasts with a pattern of new Skoda purchases being kept for ‘Sunday best’ while the previous best car was relegated to ‘Dad’s work car’. This never happened with this example as a rear end shunt in the family’s 1980 Super Estelle meant Mr Wyatt was unable to drive for quite some time and D603WAP was garaged. The car was regularly started and driven and the annual MOT was upheld. Eventually Mr Wyatt resumed driving, however by then it was the early 1990’s and his son had started snapping up further Estelle’s and Rapid’s for the going rate then of £50-£250. This meant the driveway was always full and getting the garaged 130L out became a chore. This also meant that the condition and mileage of D603WAP was preserved!

The amazing history file tracks ownership from new whereby the car was passed from Mrs Wyatt to her Husband and then their son. The mileage is fully verified by all MOT certificates kept dating back to the first in 1990 as well as extensive service and maintenance records. All handbooks and sales brochures have also been kept and both keys are present each with supplying dealer keyring. Even the tax disc holder is unused and remains in its packaging. A letter from Mr Wyatt (Son) tells the story of the car and the family’s love affair with these charming little cars. The most recent service was carried out in January 2026. This must be among the very best examples in existence.
