EXTERIOR
Produced from 1955 to 1969 at the Mirafiori Plant in Turin , the 600 was Fiat’s first rear engine car. This iconic Fiat 600D is finished in period Pale Ivory (code 214) and presents incredibly well. An impressive overall shine is witnessed although the paint finish is not to show winning standards with slight markings on close scrutiny. Structurally sound with all the chrome and stainless steel trim bright and undamaged. One front overrider is showing some dulling and light pitting is evident on the quarter light window surrounds. The rear engine compartment is clean and will impress onlookers ready for the classic car show season. A beautiful compact package.
INTERIOR
The interior styling of this classic Italian supermini is every inch a fashion icon and epitomises chic design. The original deep red vinyl seats with matching door cards and padded dash rail are in remarkable condition with no undue wear and tear. A tiny section of stitching on the passenger seat is stretched but has not come undone. The bright red carpeting is pristine as is the headlining and both compliment the upholstery colour scheme wonderfully. A conscientious previous owner has discreetly added an oil pressure and water temperature gauge. Design features such as the thin two spoke painted steering wheel to the ornate toggle switches and simplistic dials make this car as much a fashion accessory as a mode of transport, typically Italian! A very clean luggage compartment adds to an already very practical interior. Designed as frugal motoring for the masses, it’s hard to think of a more stylish way to travel on a budget.
ENGINE & TRANSMISSION
To assist with modern day usage and allow for Abarth conversion, a newer 903cc powerplant from a Fiat 128 has been professionally installed. Improved cooling measures have been taken with the fitment of an additional front radiator and a delightful exhaust note is created through a sports exhaust. The original 25bhp 767cc engine comes with the vehicle to allow factory standard specification once more should the new owner wish. The four speed gearbox with synchromesh on 2nd, 3rd and 4th is light and easy to use. Perhaps not a race winner but endless fun nevertheless.
WHEELS, TYRES & BRAKES
Five factory standard steel rims are in fantastic order and display the correct stainless hubs caps with Fiat emblem. All five tyres are matching Falken Sincera with masses of tread remaining. Hydraulically operated braking with drums all round offer adequate stopping power.
HISTORY FILE
Registered on 28th April 1970, this right hand drive example having had just five former keepers during its life has been cherished throughout its 49,423 miles covered. The previous custodian, a Mr Nicolo Salerno, purchased the Fiat in September 2010 and often displayed it outside his Italian Restaurant alongside two classic Vespa’s gaining much admiration from his customers. The intention to create an Abarth recreation was delayed after the expensive engine install due to the expansion of his business.
The original Fiat 600D instruction book remains in the history file along with some previous invoices and MOT certificates. Two sets of keys are present and even an original sales brochure completes the history file for this cute classic Fiat.
