Ford Escort MK4 XR3i

SORRY NOW SOLD – SIMILAR WANTED

An iconic hot hatch Ford Escort XR3i Mk4 with only 27,276 miles.

EQUIPMENT
Body-coloured bumpers with integral overriders, grey body side mouldings with black inserts, front and rear spoilers, tinted glass, quartz digital clock, cigar lighter, Ford ESRT 32PS radio/cassette, ‘joystick’ speaker balance control, cassette and coin stowage, tachometer, glove box light illumination, boot light, dual tone horn, sports two-spoke soft feel steering wheel. Factory Options: Tilt-or-slide glass sunroof, alloy wheels.

EXTERIOR
This incredible very early Mk4 XR3i has been preserved in stunning original condition and is a true delight for any Blue Oval connoisseur. Finished in the factory Rosso Red, (Code R5), a colour used only for a handful of early Mk4’s prior to the release of Radiant Red, this example certainly represents a rare survivor. The finish to the paintwork is superb with a deep glossy uniform shine throughout and no evidence of common fading or loss of red pigment. Various small imperfections can be seen which include a small ding on the bonnet and paint blemishes. The vehicle has always been garaged and boot spoiler has been colour coded. The underside is incredibly clean and original and free from underbody seal with no weld repairs. Still fitted with the supplying Ford Dealer number plates this retro hot hatch remains true to the 1980’s manufacturer design!

INTERIOR
Having covered such low mileage, the Daytona patterned seat fabric, (Code SF), is unworn and the snug sculptured structure remains. Ford aficionados will marvel in the factory fresh ambience of this interior which still retains a characteristic and distinctive Ford aroma! The colour-keyed cut pile carpet is unmarked and the unique Cool Black XR3i headlining is clean and tight with no tears. The moulded door trim panels including the soft-feel armrests and stowage bins are in excellent order but the material on the armrest has lifted slightly. The door pulls prone to usage related markings are almost wear free. The small two spoke sports steering wheel is commensurate with the low miles covered with all manufacturer veins still prominent. All interior gauges operate correctly along with the original Ford ESRT 32PS radio/cassette with ‘joystick’ speaker balance control. Often misused, the phrase ‘time warp’ feels truly appropriate.

ENGINE & TRANSMISSION
Standard in every respect and a purists dream, this 1.6 litre engine with Bosch K-Jetronic fuel injection. The engine bay is spotlessly clean with manufacturer stickers and plates visible along with clear stampings to the inner wings. A crisp, responsive 104bhp offers hugely entertaining driving manners and swift performance. A top speed of 115mph and 0-60mph in 9.6 seconds feels spirited thanks to a kerb weight of just 945kg. The 5-speed transmission is light, precise and a joy to use.

WHEELS, TYRES & BRAKES
The optional alloy wheels with Ford emblem are unmarked and shod is Firestone 185/60 R14 tyres all with excellent tread remaining and the spare wheel retains the original Dunlop Sport D3. The diagonally-split dual-line servo assisted brakes with front discs and self-adjusting rear drums stop the car quickly and safely.

HISTORY FILE
Supplied new by Ford Main Dealers, Crystal Ford of Hull Ltd on the 12th August 1986, this example had two keepers within its first year of life. The third keeper, Mr John Hallam a retired Professor, purchased the car in October 1987 and remained the owner until 2015. Mr Hallam enjoyed the car as his pride and joy for five years before stopping driving for health reasons. Garage stored for 23 years until KGF Classic Cars discovered it nearly a decade ago and were delighted to offer it to market whereby it was promptly snapped up. Honoured to have been offered it again the car has recently had a major service and cambelt change in November 2024. Subsequently sold again in late 2024 to a long-standing collector client who has now acquired from us a Ford Fiesta RS Turbo and reluctant sale of this XR3i necessitated by a strict one in one out policy.

The original service booklet contains annual stamped entries for the cars early years prior to storage as well as the most recent entries commencing in 2015 with the last in 2024. A Crystal dealer sticker was applied to the front cover of the service book and remains attached. The vehicle handbook and radio guide also form part of the history file all contained withing the blue A5 Ford wallet. Two original keys to operate all locks and a sales brochure are included.

EXTERIOR
Affectionately known as the Green Goddess, this stunning Ford Escort Mexico is finished in unmissable Modena Green, (Code M), exactly as it left the AVO factory in 1973. Discreetly modified, this Escort has dominated the show circuit with at least 30 awards from the ‘Best Mk1 RS Escort’ at Ford Fair in 1991 and ‘3rd Mexico’ at AVO National Day in 2006. Scrutinising the car it is unbelievable that the documented and photographed restoration was carried out over 34 years ago, such is the stunning condition today. With a tiny split to the rear window rubber and some touched-in marks, this is no freshly restored and unproven machine covering 14,000 miles since complete. So many original features remain fitted from Ford Triplex glass to FoMoCo rear light lenses and importantly, the car is registered and is well known with the AVO Club and still has its factory Type 49 heavy duty body. A very desirable Ford Rallye Sport hero.

INTERIOR
An amazing Ford Mexico Custom Pack interior awaits the lucky driver of this iconic model. Still upholstered in the original factory Black Beta cloth, one can forgive a few tiny nicks, much preferred over aftermarket retrims. The black looped-pile carpet and black headlining are unmarked and the door cards are not warped. All instrumentation within the dished six-dial dash is operational along with switchgear. Benefiting from a RS2000-type full height console housing a period and working Radiomobile and inoperative Kinzie clock, this is no poverty base spec or stripped out race car! Discreet luxuries such as central locking and door speakers have been added. The boot area is spotlessly clean housing the spare wheel, jack and wheel brace in the original fawn muslin bag. This package is hard to beat.

ENGINE & TRANSMISSION
Nestled between the AVO Escorts inner front wings is the original matching numbers and rebuilt Kent XFlow bored out and honed to 1660cc Caterham Supersprint specification. In brief, it has a Stage 2 skimmed and ported cylinder head, bronze valve guides and lightweight heavy duty Duplex valve springs. Pocketed 1300 GT pistons are fitted along with a performance Kent camshaft and steel crankshaft pully. The flywheel is balanced and lightened. Twin Weber 40 DCOE carburettors with a K&N air filters and full stainless steel exhaust system sounds fantastic and essential components such as an uprated an electric fuel pump, high pressure and capacity oil pump, Bosch distributor and Lumenition ignition all enhance the driving pleasure and reliability. The engine presents fabulously with the chassis number on the strut top and even the delicate cardboard lower engine cover in situ. A rebuilt and strengthened 4-speed gearbox with a complete upgraded clutch assembly drives the rear wheels through a 3.54 crown wheel and pinion from the RS2000 to allow better cruising speeds.

WHEELS, TYRES, & BRAKES
Spoke-style sculptured steel wheels measuring 5.5×13 inch with genuine RS centre caps are immaculate and finished in the correct two-tone with metallic Pearl Grey centres. Sticky Yokohama 185/60 R13 tyres have ample tread. Ventilated front discs are gripped by uprated calipers and Mexico rear drums which have RS2000 back-plates and shoes, do a fine job of stopping the car. Goodridge brake lines and a relocated Lockheed remote brake servo also help ensure safety under hard braking.

HISTORY FILE
Built at Fords Advanced Vehicle Operations factory in Aveley in October 1973, this vehicle was first registered on the 14th February 1974. A very well-known car within club circles, this genuine article has only had five former keepers from new and the last for 36 years! Michael Lloyd-Jacobs is a perfectionist, a Rolls-Royce and Bentley technician by trade and when he bought this Escort Mexico in August 1989 he intended it for everyday use rather than a concours winner! That is why it features many discreet modifications to the engine, suspension and brakes that do not look out of place, in fact and being a stickler for detail, when complete in the Spring of 1991 the car was able to enter both concours and modified classes – and win! With a huge box of trophies, rosettes and certificates and a list of all the awards from AVO National Days, Ford Fairs, RS National Days and many more, the provenance of this car is unrivalled. Two huge files of neatly presented invoices, AVO Club valuations and a letter from the owner make wonderful reading. Featured many times in HAVOC, the club magazine for AVO members and a magazine feature in Fast Ford dated January 1992, are all valuable documents. The next lucky custodian can expect to be blown away with both the condition and driving experience.

HISTORY
The Raleigh Chopper, although an icon of the 1970’s and where it saw the majority of its phenomenal success, was first launched in 1969 by the Raleigh Bicycle Company in Nottingham, England. The bikes design was influenced by dragsters, chopped motorcycles and beach buggies and it quickly became a cultural icon, especially among young people. Throughout the evolution of the Chopper from the Mark 1 to the Mark 4, the essence of the design has changed very little, but certain safety flaws linked to the Mark 1 and 2 had to be overcome following negative press in the 1970’s where it was in some cases labelled as a dangerous toy! These included the tendency for the bike to perform involuntary ‘wheelies’ particularly when giving a friend a ‘backie’ on the long padded high-back seat and also the groin catching T-Bar frame mounted gear lever. Thankfully after an absence of over 20 years saw the Mark 3 relaunch with a more conventional seat to deter the offering of ‘backies’ and re-siting of the gear lever to the handlebar, a more personal equipment friendly location! Whilst the original Choppers have gained highly collectable status and soaring prices, the limited-edition releases are extremely sought after among collectors.

Supplied by a limited number of Raleigh stockists, these bikes are highly collectable.

The bike has never been unboxed and is of course unassembled. The box has a few light storage marks and even the plastic strapping has not been removed.

FUNCTIONALITY
Modern specification separates this Chopper from its earlier Mark 1 and 2 brethren with 6-speed Shimano Revoshift derailleur gears controlled by a grip shift, aluminium V-brakes

Celebrating the famous Chopper phenomenon that singlehandedly saved a struggling Raleigh in the 1970’s, this Black and Gold Limited Edition is one of only 1 of 400 made and is highly collectable.

Gilera T50 Touring

SORRY NOW SOLD – SIMILAR WANTED

A sixteener special and collectable UK Gilera T50 Touring Moped.

MODEL HISTORY
On the 15th December 1971 the Tory Transport Minister, John Peyton, changed British two-wheeler licensing regulations and the infamous ‘sixteener law’ forced all 16-year old motorcyclists onto mopeds. The law was intended to force novice bikers onto 50cc shopping bikes and reduce accident statistics but demand remained and manufacturers produced more powerful models. Equipped with pedals, added as a token gesture to comply with the law, the sports moped arrived dubbed ‘sixteener specials’. The historic Gilera marque was founded in 1909 near Monza in Italy by Count Guiseppe Gilera. In the 1950’s, Gilera had huge success and won multiple 500cc world championships as well as several TT wins. Gilera Touring and Trials sports mopeds were imported to the UK from mid-1972 and were built with an air of quality, and the general attention to detail and finish was considered to be first class.

Gallon fuel tank, light alloy wheel hubs, INOX stainless steel front and rear mudguards, chrome exhaust, Veglia Borletti speedometer, headlight with lights-on indicator, rear lamp, electromagnetic horn, engine cut-out button, fuel valve, rear foot pegs, Gilera embossed dual seat with pillion strap.
