The high specification Volvo 340GL featured metallic paint as standard and this incredible example is finished in Volvo Dark Red Metallic, (Code 186-5). The factory original paintwork has an incredible lustrous finish, a testament to the superb quality of Volvo paint and the extraordinarily low mileage of just 9,843 miles. All factory panels are pin straight and the underside is incredibly clean with a light coating of factory wax and even manufacturer labels and a genuine Volvo exhaust are intact. The bumpers, trim sections are all intact and free from damage. The supplying Volvo main dealer number plates are fitted, as is the supplying dealer rear screen sticker. Altogether a remarkably well preserved and rare example, more than worthy of the time warp description.
The super plush interior of this well-appointed 340GL is in near perfect condition, commensurate with the incredibly low mileage covered. The delightfully period Dark Red cloth interior, (Code 6261), and matching carpets are spotlessly clean and free from wear. Being the range topping GL model, this example features enhancements such as specially upholstered door cards and rear centre armrest, and the driver’s seat heating automatically switches on below 15°C and off again at 25°C. The dashboard and controls are as new including the unused cigar lighter, and all equipment and controls are fully functioning. There is some light shrinkage to the passenger door card and a chip to the inner door pull. A spotless boot area still wears the immaculate boot carpet and undamaged foldable parcel shelf. Exceptionally comfortable and a perfect example of legendary Volvo build quality.
ENGINE & TRANSMISSION
The original 1397cc B14 petrol engine offers 72bhp/105Nm of torque and feels very strong and willing whilst being remarkably quiet, thanks to extensive factory sound insulation. The engine bay is a show piece and displays factory plates, stickers and Volvo manufacturer stampings, as well as the spare wheel which still wears the original Michelin MXL tyre. The 5-speed manual gearbox, standard on the GL, operates well and allows excellent progression up the range. Extremely reliable, comfortable and perfect for modern classic touring.
WHEELS, TYRES & BRAKES
The standard 13in steel wheels with original Volvo centre caps are in immaculate condition and originality seekers will be delighted to see the factory Michelin MXL 175/70 R13 tyres still fitted. Any buyer wishing to use the car will have the added benefit of a spare set of Volvo 340 wheels and tyres which come with the car ready for use. The dual circuit servo-assisted brakes offer ample straight-line braking.
Registered new on 14th August 1984 by Volvo Main Dealer, Continental Cars (Leigh in Sea Ltd), this example has covered just 9,843 miles with just three keepers in total. The first owner was a retired gentleman who used the car only very sparingly and used the same village garage for all servicing work. Upon him ceasing driving the car was bought by the garage who knew just how good the car was and the third owner was a friend of the garage Proprietor. The history file contains the dealer supplied Volvo book pack with all handbooks and dealership literature as well as previous MOT certificates. An original Volvo 340 range sales brochure is also included in the history file along with two sets of original keys and dealer keyrings. This exceptional super-low mileage example is certainly one of the best in existence and perhaps even worthy of the winner’s podium at Hagerty’s Festival of the Unexceptional!
