The first model in BMW’s line of Z-Series roadsters, the iconic Z1 was build in limited numbers of just 8,000. All left-hand drive, the majority of cars (6,443) were sold to the home German market with Italy taking the second largest number of cars, making this UK supplied example exceptionally rare. Z stands for Zukunft, or ‘Future’ translated from German and aerodynamics played a huge part in the cars design, with a fully flat under-tray and rear diffuser. Other unique features were the electrically operated vertical sliding doors and bodywork made from various composite resin panels, to which BMW insisted could be fully changed in 40 minutes by a competent Technician, even to the point where they recommended buyers purchased a second set of panels in order to change the colour at a quim!
