Chrome mudguards front and rear, chrome side repeaters, twin chrome adjustable mirrors, capacitor discharge ignition CDI, speedometer, tachometer, turn signal switch, headlight switch, engine kill switch, neutral indicator, oil light, high beam light, horn, rear footrests, fuel valve with reserve, steering lock, helmet holder, under seat storage, lockable fuel cap.
Finished in the iconic Clean White, the paintwork with matching side faring is in superb order with the famous and correct red Yamaha speed block motif proudly on display. The chrome work boasts a mirror finish and the rear exhaust silencers have never been touched clearly showing the Yamaha part numbers to each pipe. The downpipes have been replaced with stainless items with the originals included and the seat base is a fibreglass item with the correct owner’s manual cover, seat rubbers, hinges and seat catch. It also has a brand new seat sponge and cover with tool kit included. The high-tensile steel tubular double-cradle frame has been powder-coated with the frame number visible and matches the engine number. All functions, lights and controls operate perfectly and the speedometer mph is marked in lower-case mph only fitted to the E Model type. A very special air-cooled sports machine.
ENGINE & TRANSMISSION
The 2-stroke torque induction twin cylinder engine has a 247cc displacement and produces 32bhp at 8000rpm. Featuring advanced technology at the time such as Yamahas Autolube system varying the delivery of pressurised oil linked to the throttle and precise ignition timing by utilising transistorised Capacitor Discharge Ignition, CDI. The engine has been aqua blasted to create the show appearance and has just been fully rebuilt running on a premix of oil and petrol while the oil pump slowly pumps the oil through the new clear oil pipes. The 6-speed transmission has perfectly selected ratios and a multi-plate clutch running in oil for feather light changes. Please note a running-in period of 500 miles is required.
WHEELS, TYRES & BRAKES
This RD250 remains fitted with the stylish cast-alloy wheels with red detailing. These rims are in fantastic condition with only mild aging visible on close scrutiny. Quality Avon RoadRider 100/90-18 rear and 90/90 -18 front tyres retain excellent tread. Hydraulic 267mm disc brakes front and rear feature single piston calipers, braided hose fitted to the front and new rubber hose fitted to the rear and a replacement front master cylinder to stop effectively and safely.
Registered new on the 22nd September 1978 this RD250 Model E type left the factory destined for the UK in the desirable Clean White with the superb 250cc two-stroke, twin cylinder engine, the same engine still fitted today. Survival of this matching numbers example can be attributed to having just four former keepers, the last, Mr Mark Moore, purchased the bike in 2017. A Yamaha collector and restorer of the highest standing, his collection of bikes and passion for the marque are the envy of many and this example boasts all the hallmarks of a knowledgeable enthusiast.
